ryanair allocated seating

Been using Ryaniair for years and never had a problem with getting seats together . didnt want to pay a further 40- 60 pounds to choose my seats ( 4 of us) so checked in and guess what got the worst seats -  row 11 no window . will miss looking out the window !! think i preferred the old system

We flew November, January and March with RA, Jan was the first time we'd been allocated seating. I thought it was great, no pushing or shoving..got my hand baggage easily in over head locker, hubby has a holdall with our books, water etc which always goes under seat anyway...but then you can't please everyone. If you check in online early (14 days before) you should always get seating next to each other..check in 2 days before the flight you'll get what's left over.
Btw..once you've taken off there's not a lot to see out of the windows except a bit of cloud

I booked in Dec for Sept At the time no pre booked seat option was available, so paid for priority boarding. Will I now have to pay for seats as well, to ensure we sit together.

No I shouldnt think so. When you print your check in boarding passes it will say on there where you're sitting, it also says if you go to the front of the back of the aircraft for your seats..saves faffing about really.

No you won't Jon, you will be able to pick your seat when you are checking in online.

What I did recently going to fuerte was logged on 14 days before I was due to fly and selected my seats for the outward journey, then 7 days later did the same for the return journey.

If you want the premium seats in rows 1-6 and the over wing exit, you have to pay extra.

A few reasons Spike, main one is the Mrs has a real fear of flying and doesn't want to be on her own with people she doesn't know. Yes we do have kids. It makes it asier for buying drinks etc if we,re all together, and I prefer to be close to a loo after imbibing my pre holiday airport tipples.

I won't bother you at all. Quite the opposite in fact. I get my book out, read it, and in no time we're there

I preferred the old system of free seating.
We often ended up in the emergency exit regardless of priority boarding. That won't happen anymore.

We also had to make a late booking from Fuerte back to the UK last week. We  paid top dollar for the seats (well 180 Euro) and in the busy flight there were no seats together whether you paid for them or not.

It must be said though, that the service changes on Ryanair in the past months are very welcome. It is no longer a trial to board the aircraft and I am sure that their reputation will improve as the word gets around.
We even got a quiet couple of hours after an early flight time.

Jet2 and Easyjet were previously better for service quality but now they had better match prices.

Just get the check-in done as early as possible.

Best thing they ever did was allow pre booked seats on easyjet. We live in Plymouth and as I am very tall  I couldn't fit in the standard seats. As such I always had to book with TC or TMPSON to be able to guarentee a leg room seat which meant a drive to London, Manchester or wherever for the flights. Now I can pre book the seats with EJ it means I can fly out of Bristol Airport which is only an hour and half from home and also means cheaper flights too.

Worth noting Ryanair's change of check-in timing.  If you haven't bought reserved seats, you can now only check in 7 days before the flight.

What`s all this really about? If it`s just the budget airlines striving to generate more revenue then it`s only going to work for a short time. Once they have all got  to the same point then they will all be more or less level pegging again, no clear advantage on any airline. Or is it driven by a need to improve boarding times and thus turnround times? It`s sometimes very noticeable (especially with FR) that there is an urgency to board everyone asap. When this happens all the cabin bag checks are discontinued and you can almost feel the flight attendants pushing from the back. Staged boarding and seat allocation serve to bring some order to the proceedings but I must say, like macb above, I preferred the first come first served method. Although I never saw any instances of premium seats given away, rather the opposite in fact. The unsold premium seats were taped off and then an attempt was made to sell them retrospectively. When no one took up the offer the seats remained unoccupied. Anyway, as long as I don`t have to pay more than a couple of quid I don`t mind. Athough I would like the flexibility to change seats if I got sat next to the fat guy that featured on a youtube clip once. I would hate to think that someone was spilling over into a seat that I had paid for. Brings to mind the conversation we once had on here about weighing passengers and surcharging the bloaters. Used to happen back in the thirties, there still exists a publicity shot of a smiling woman quite happily being weighed at the check in desk. Quite trim though, not like Vanessa Phelps.

Was there not an issue about the window exit seat being unoccupied in the event of an emergency, as no one had been briefed on how to open it?  I wonder how they got around that?
