Bottle top Collection

Sometimes I have been asked to collect bottle tops for the benefit of some charitable cause or other, but I never knew what happened to them or how bottle tops could have a value.
There is a girl called Rita whose family need to find 20 000 euro for a seven course of treatment at the Instituto Fay in Madrid. I have seen her story in a couple of newpapers. To raise the money there are raffles and events and there is also a collection of bottle tops. If enough bottle tops are collected the Fundacion Seur will pay half the cost of the treatment.
There will be collections at the Las Rotundas comercial centre this Saturday and Sunday.
Her parents have also set up a telephone line so that people who want to help or to know more can contact them. It is 672 254 197.

Better get collecting then.  The beaches would be a good sort of place to start, I suppose.

I must have led a sheltered life, I have never been asked to collect bottle tops.

I started collecting them because that's what a lot of people do in France, where I lived for 15 years. Most supermarkets there have an enormous bin for them so there must be literally mountains of them being collected country-wide for charity over there.

Thanks for publicising this, trebol66. I give mine to a couple of bar owners who know where to send them on to.  What we really need to know is what to do with them. You can't expect people to go to a special place at a special time. It would be great if there were some permanent collection points.

I don´t know exactly how it works, but this foundation appears to give money to good causes that are able to collect a particular amount of bottle tops. I guess it is just a way of showing the commitment people have to collecting them and that thge cause has a wide ranging support.

The lady on the desk on the lower floor of Las Rotundas was pleased to see them when I took mine.

I´ll go back and ask where the other drop off points are. I know Inspecasa, if that is how it is spelt, are collaborating.

I´m going to organise collection on my complex for this and other future collections.

It occurs to me that the councils already recycle plastics and glass in the Canaries and the proceeds probably go some way towards keeping down your taxes.
Here on Anglesey, we not only recycle plastic, glass and metal via the council scheme but garden waste and food wastes, all for composting. I opt for recycling my own veg. wastes in a council subsidised dendrobaena wormery - excellent for fishing bait.

It's a pure recycling exercise, the plastic is sold to a recycling company. The Foundation have set things up so that no extra 'miles' are involved in the effort; collections are on the back of existing commercial activities such as deliveries to shops. All the money raised goes to the good causes - the Foundation takes nothing for admin etc.

I asked the girl who was manning the stand in Las Rotundas if there were other places to hand the tops in. She didn't seem sure about where else they could be given in apart from at the service station on the hill out of Puerto towards Tetir.

I asked how it worked and she said that they had to send the tops in every month between now and September, so there is plenty of time to hand them in.

I'll try to find out a bit more.

AND don't forget the baskets in every supermarket where you can put a tin of something or a pack of dried food for the poor and old, locally - please be generous, many people here are having a very hard time, they are not protected by the social service like people in the UK

I don't know if this is genuine, but there have been various charity hoaxes around for years and this is typical.
