The Guardia Civil and National Police  arrested eleven people on Wednesday, ten in the south of Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, in an operation against drug trafficking has allowed seize a cache of 650 kilos of hashish, according to reported research sources.

The operation was carried out jointly between the Guardia Civil and National Police, and has been coordinated by the Court of Instruction No. 6 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which has declared the proceedings secret.

Of the eleven arrested, eight are Spanish and three are Moroccans, have indicated the sources, who have pointed out that the operation is still open but no more arrests are expected.

Research conducted so far suggest that the fate of the drug was not Fuerteventura, but Gran Canaria.

According to sources, the drug has been seized as a result of house searches conducted, which also found some marijuana plants.

The Spanish authorities are celebrating success in a massive drugs operation that has seen 500 kilos of cocaine seized after a yacht was intercepted in international waters off the Canaries.

Details of the seizure, one of the biggest in recent years, were only released early yesterday in order not to jeopardise the operation to arrest the people behind the major drug-smuggling ring operating out of South America to the Canary Islands via the west coast of Africa. Five people have been arrested - one Irishman, two Spaniards and an Australian woman all in the Canaries - along with the American skipper of the Maid of Orleans yacht, which was boarded by armed officers more than a thousand miles off the Canaries in the early hours of 17 July. The Irish national was named locally last night only by his first name and the initial of his surname (Kenneth C.) but his age and birthplace in Ireland are not known. The Maid of Orleans had been under discreet surveillance for approximately one month by customs and drug squads in various countries in South America and Europe due to its suspicious activities. Once confirmation was received from intelligence sources that it was heading for the Canaries, possibly via Cape Verde, Spain dispatched an armed Customs patrol vessel to make the intercept. The massive stash of drugs was located in 500 individually wrapped 1-kilo packages concealed in a false floor and panels built in to the vessel by its American skipper, who was also a carpenter. The cocaine, with a street value of millions of euros, was on its way to the Canaries for distribution in the islands and the rest of Spain. At a press conference held yesterday to give details of the dramatic operation in Las Palmas, where the yacht arrived under escort a few days ago, delighted police chiefs said several weapons including three handguns, a semi-automatic pistol and an assault rifle had also been seized in various raids carried out in the Canaries since the boarding at sea. Also discovered were gold bars worth €135,000 and satellite telecommunications equipment. Three other boats as well as two Harley Davidson motorcycles have been confiscated in the operation.

Its not just the detrimental effects of the drugs on the body etc., its the added financial burdens to those who become addiced, even to recreational drugs.

The Civil Guard intercepted four boats carrying drugs in a fortnight which prevented the entry of more than two tons of hashish in Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura and arrested nineteen people, said Friday the military institution.  The operations took place between 26 June and 11 July indicated a comunicado.El June 26, the Civil Guard defeated the attempt to introduce 1,200 kilos of hashish with a zodiac type boat on the coast of Burrero , in the town of Ingenio, and arrested six people on board the boat.

Later, another five people arrested and charged to another in relation to the same operation.  The second interception came last July 4 Veneguera the coast of the municipality of Mogan, where agents seized 810 kilos of hashish and arrested the two occupants of a boat and a third person responsible for receiving the drug.

The third boat was intercepted by a patrol boat of the Maritime Service of the Civil Guard on 4 July, on his way to the coast of Fuerteventura.  At the time the patrol boat approached, the occupants tried to throw into the sea carrying the drug, although agents recovered 30 kilos of hashish and arrested the three crew.  The fourth vessel was intercepted on 11 July at the Castle Romeral coast, in the municipality of San Bartolomé, with 150 kilos of hashish, although no one could stop her.

Subsequent research helped identify four people, the two occupants of the skiff, which have not been arrested, and two other people in charge of receiving the drugs themselves have been arrested.

As a result of the interception of the latter vessel, a house search was performed in a house in the town of Neighborhood, in the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, which intervened computer equipment, various documents, mobile phones and 6 vehicles

There are a lot of misconceptions and hysteria fuelled by The Daily Mail about The Weed.

The main thing though - it is not addictive.

I've been smoking weed for 47 years. I've never taken anything addictive - other than tobacco and alcohol.
Nowadays I just have a small one after the kids have gone to bed as a nightcap.

The financial burden is non existant - I spend less than 25 euros a month on my little indulgance and that's only because I don't want the plants around the house otherwise it would cost nothing.

I've held high power jobs and raised a lovely family.

I never smoke during the day (not since I was a student anyway).
I was never stoned when working.
I have never even seen heroin in real life.
I never cross borders with any, so my holidays are weed-free - no withdrawal symptoms of any kind.
I spent several years travelling and living in the Middle East and never touched the stuff there - again no withdrawal symptoms.

I am not a demon - some of you may even know me.

In this country I am not even breaking the law.

Please don't believe the tosh published by the tabloids.

I do know it helped my old mum's osteoporis, right up until her 80's. She never had a lot, maybe once or twice a week but was crippled with arthritis and it helped alleviate her pain a lot.

You didn't cite your source but I Googled that quote and on the first link I note that you cherry-picked your quote.

Your paragraph (on the page I found) concludes thus:

The rest of that page is pretty inconclusive - pro-pot people say it's great , anti-pot people say it's not.

The argument will rage on and on and on.

Sure if you smoke (or drink) during the day you are more likely to mess up somehow.

All I can say is that I have what is considered a high IQ but if I was daft enough to sit the test while stoned or drunk I would lose 8 points at least - and that when I was a student, practically everyone I knew smoked pretty regularly. None, to my knowledge, went on to harder stuff and (as far as I know) they've all carved a good living out of life.


So from my (almost half a century of) experience with the stuff - Yes she is wrong.

Just on a historical note ( not arguing for or against) and as a matter of Fact Cannabis pre dates Tobacco in North Africa and southern Europe by a considerable number of centuries, It was used by early christians and jews and widely by Moslims. On another historical fact that several pipes  unearthed at the home of Shakespeare had residue from cannabis contained therein so that may explain A Midsummernights Dream ( alright being pedantic I know but how else can you explain Puck? With repect to Hashish our word Assassin as hired killers come from the Arabic Ḥashshāshīn roughly translated as those who smoke the hash ( although this is considered by some as a misnomer) or as a lower class social outcast depending and was brought to english by returning crusaders

I have a confession to make. I was in the Milk production industry and also the distribution end of the market for several years. Yes I know it is hard to believe but I was a MILK DEALER.  My product  was free from alcohol, cabbage, and onions, and Indian food,  the best quality available to mankind actually.
If I had only known that it could  lead to heroin, crack & cocaine addictions, thieving and murdering,schitzophrenia, and mental disturbances I would have continued eating Cabbage.

Phaedra is right FiFi, both me and my brother were addicted to milk from a very young age, we were constantly "Monitored" by our parents. We became dealers and were known as the "Krate Twins", started off with 1/2 pint pasteurised, both finishing up on "Full Cream". We ran a  "Crate Den" for five years until my brother lost his "Bottle". We started to water it down to make more money, but two kids "Topped" themselves on a bad trip. We both finished in the gutter, me a Local Authority Councillor and my brother in the Police, how low can you get.
