According to AENA tourist arrivals fell by almost 12% in January 2013.

116,142 passengers entered the Island last month, 15,709 less than in January 2012.
The Tourist Board predicts a recovery from March

Holiday rentals are well down also, according to a reliable scource, especially on the Golf Course.

Can't see the tourist numbers recovering any time soon until they sort out the connectivity issues due to the increase in landing fees. Ryanair and Easyjet have pulled a number of UK routes as they are no longer profitable enough. Iberia pulled their routes to Fuerte from Spain and have not reinstated them. While they are busy promoting Fuerte in Scandinavia and Russia, this only equates in real terms to a couple of flights a week, so not enough to make up the shortfall else where. And on top of that of course is the reduction in available properties to rent due to the enforcement of the tourist letting laws and all the uncertainty around the new law coming in by May 13. So it costs more to get here and when you do, you have less choice on where to stay - genius!

There are quite a few German visitors in Caleta at the moment. The Broncemar, Barcello, Sheraton and Elba Sara are all advertised on one German Travel website.

Peejay, I totally agree with you. We are never going to increase tourist numbers with the increase in landing taxes and accommodation issues. They don't seem able to understand the needs of tourists. They really need to get to grips with the situation before Fuerteventura is bankrupt.

@Peejay & Glenys - The Retirement Gap
In the nineties and 2000's people used to retire on average at 55 thus getting a fixed income for the rest of their lives. Now people know they will have to work until 65. Thus instead of overwintering in the south people now have to work or standing in the waiting lines of unemployment requiring to get verified of their presence and if they have been looking for jobs.
That's 10 years of people less overwintering - thus lower tourist numbers.

At the same time Ryanair and others have increased their price.


This Retirement Gap will also have an impact on real estate: previously people bought their 'Place in the sun' at an age of 50 to 55 - now there is less stimulus as they have to work or be in unemployment (and not able to leave the country for a month).
I doubt many people will buy a second home / place in the sun when they are 65.

We where in the Jandia area Feb 2nd - 16th. The first week was the quietest I have ever seen it. There did seem to pep up with an influx of Germans on week two

With regards rented accomodation,I,m looking to rent for 8 weeks minimum but  some of the prices being quoted compared to what i've paid for this year are outrageous to say the least. With possibly less flights ex UK,coupled with higher fares,the Euro being unstable it is putting me off booking anything until nearer the time.

Caleta is very busy at the moment day and night. had meals out Thurs and Fri. El Capitan packed, El Patio, Fado and Nestors all full. Its nice to sit in a resturant with people from all over Europe around you. Not seen as many people around for a while good news...

That's great news ashworth ! So where do these figures come from stating tourist visits have fallen ? I gets confused

We have been coming to Caleta for over 10 years. It is the busiest I have seen it. Lots of people from all over Europe. Not as many families but lots of over 50s couples who want to have a drink and eat out and they have a few quid to spend. Not sure if the summer bookings for Families will be as good,  they are the group of people who are being squeezed for cash all over Europe. I do here that Corralejo is very quiet, and not sure about down South. But to me Caleta seems to be doing OK.....

Caleta was very busy in January when we were there. Been visiting for about 13 years and it was the busiest I've seen it. Yes it's great to see lots of different nationalities besides the Brits lots of Danish, Dutch, German and French. Let's hope it lasts.
