Sorry Fifi,a sensible suggestion, and has been used in the past, however some people with disabilities hate the title , "Special Needs". Also it usually refers to children or younger people with disabilities.

Disability Issues.

It's all-encompassing. There's a lot of people, who would never describe themselves as disabled, yet they could benefit from discussions on such issues.

You don't have to have 'reduced mobility' to find that a place has just a few too many steps for you. Or that some place has absolutely nowhere to sit. Or that the nearest Pharmacy is 20km away. Or which is the better hospital or clinic to visit after falling  off of a wall. Or even, as a fit 6'4", my preference for a divan rather than a bedstead. Even dietary requirements - I found out the hard way that one of my regular clients has a morbid fear of bananas!

'People with Disabilities' is too closely defined, and isolating, as well as sounding too PC.

Huge numbers of people have 'Issues they have to work around', but would never consider themselves disabled or even otherwise-abled, but nevertheless plan their travels around those issues.

'Disabilty Issues' is surely more inclusive. (or even Ability Issues????)

bridlife

Disability issues is fine. I used to work for a company called Ability. People may not understand a title like ability issues. It has to be in the context of disability.

The 'ability issues' was meant to be a little lighthearted, but I think it's important that the content of the section be 'inclusive' as so many need a litle help from time to time.

appy ammer

what chance have the less abled got when the abled cant even agree on a subject title, have a seperate vote on the side of the forum for the people who the section is intended to help.

Why is it whatever debate that crops up here you always seem to be on the wrong side. I don't wish ill fortune on you but being in that position even temporarily might show you the importance of labels.

Even then it's not just about feelings, labels allow the majority to justify looking down on other people when they are separated for any reason.

How many times people wish for a better world but few want to actually make a difference by practicing it.

I don't quite understand what you mean Zappa about Cameron being on the wrong side..all he's saying is let's not go sown the pc route..sorry but I cant see what's wrong with that.

The benefit entitlement in the UK is called DLA..which stands for Disability Living Allowance..it's not called Physically Challenged Living Allowance...

Why not call it what the authorities here in Spain call it 'Barrier Free'

IsThisForumStillGoingWow

Because that's a silly name. Sounds more like immigration dept.

Hev's original suggestion included those with special dietary requirements.

"Disability Advice and information" much as I like it, doesn't address that.

I'll propose two options:

1. Dietary & Disability Advice and Information

2. separating the sections i.e
Dietary Advice & Information  and a separate section: Disability Advice and information

So in hope of reaching some consensus so we can get on with it and barring major objection to either option may we have your thoughts as to which option i.e. 1 or 2.

Pearl

Maybe but I bet a lot of people with disabilities and reduced mobility understand exactly what it means.  Barrier Free Tourism.

IsThisForumStillGoingWow

Well Pearl I am disabled and sorry but I wouldn't have a clue what it meant..I dont need to be wrapped in cotton wool and trod lightly round..I am disabled ..end of matter...NOT physically challenged, and certainly not a barrier !!!!

Hev wrote "all he's (Cameron) saying is let's not go sown the pc route..sorry but I cant see what's wrong with that."

Because in his negativity he thought it wasn't worth debate after others thought it important enough to make suggestions and especially after Globetrotter explained why.

We're not talking about a fat person being called horizontally challenged, although that's a joke terms like it are used to make a mockery of the sound thinking behind it. It's an attempt to turn the general public against it by people who in reality mask their distaste for certain minorities.

It's subtle games but you only have to listen to their other views by people who say such things to prove my point.

I think Admin's suggestion of 1. Dietary & Disability Advice and Information (do I have to say "Admin wrote") is a pretty good one that says it all.

I think option 2 is the right one after all it is about offering people with mobility problems advice

Elite of the forum
