Rivero slams 'enemies' of Canaries for flight losses

Canarian president Paulino Rivero used a visit to a new technology park in Fuerteventura yesterday to launch a stinging attack on the Spanish government and the national airport authority (AENA), whom he described as the "enemies of the islands" for their role in the drop in flights from the mainland.

Rivero said that the loss of around one million Spanish tourists in the last four years was a direct result of the "misguided policies" of both Madrid and AENA. "We are losing our flight connections due to their decisions yet they do not seem to care" said the president, adding that Madrid's support for oil drilling plans here was a further sign of central government's lack of concern for the fate of the tourist industry. He vowed to continue the political fight to prevent oil giant Repsol from drilling off Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

I totally agree. Sounds like Rivero is saying something right for once.  Can he now turn his attentions to the "Other" enemy of the island, the one called "All Inclusive"

While I agree where your coming from to a small degree that is, you have to remember that AI has its place on the island. It does bring in more visitors who don't all camp within the hotels grounds and do get about to the various villages.   If the wife and I go ourselves we will rent and go SC, however if we go with the grandchildren there is only one way to be able to afford taking them to the island and thats AI.

I have looked at self catering, flights and associated spending money and to be honest it was cheaper to go AI with them.  Also don't forget the thousands of jobs AI offers to the locals or/and Spanish mainlanders who come over to work.  Think about the food they consume, which by large comes from Spain,

The cost of eating out is getting very expensive, and with kids its better in the multi selection buffet that all AI offer, as my grand kids are a nightmare to feed.

So while I can understand your apathy at the AI, think of the good points.  Lets face it, those who want nothing else but SC and Restaurants etc, can still do it, AI isn't getting in the way is it

I agree All Inclusive does have it's place, but in the right Hotels with the right people.

There are too many cheap 2 Star Hotels offering AI, which is just attracting the worst kind of Holidaymakers, Dross and Families From Hell, as witnessed by the fiasco in Legends Bar a couple of weeks ago. (see this months Fuerte Extra letters).

Hotels offering AI should be at least 4 Stars, and offer decent Food and Drink. This way you should get more responsible people who are not on the Vodkas all day, from Breakfast onwards, only to be let out at 11.00pm when the Bar shuts, to roam the streets drunk, with no money in their pockets.

But is Rivero going to gain anything by royally micturating off the Spanish bigwigs in Madrid, or is he shooting himself in the foot? I agree with his goal, but I think he'll find that Madrid has a heck of a lot more weight to throw around than the Canaries will ever have. He might have done better to negotiate than demand.

What policies is Rivero talking about? If I was a gambling man, I would bet the outcome of his fight against "Oil Drilling" would be for him to resign in protest (huge payout and pension perks) and Respol to win. I hope I am completely wrong, as I am sure the majority on this forum feel the same. The Spanish president is under investigation for corruption, namely, accepting bribes, the Spanish people must despair, what an example.

It all boils down to the same thing. Corruption. They're all at it. Being elected to head of office in Spain is like being handed a blank cheque.

AENA hmm are they not the bunch that thought it fit that fuerty was the only one of the four islands  not allowed to have Ryanair base two aircraft here we have suffered ever since.
