Canarian cars among oldest in the country


For all the industry incentives to buy new cars, the Canaries continue to be among the regions in Spain with the oldest vehicles on the roads.
A study by car dealer association Fredica shows that just over half the vehicles on the roads here at present are more than 10 years old. More than 670,000 of the 1.25 million registered vehicles have passed the decade mark, a proportion that is 66% higher than it was in 2007. The steep rise is interpreted as a direct result of the economic crisis, with owners forced to hold on to and repair their vehicles rather than trade them in for a new one. New car sales have plummeted by nearly 70% in the past six years, according to the dealers.

What's the point of having a spanking new car here, with all the latest bells and whistles? I'm sure most of us find it's rare to drive for more than an hour at any one time, and the maximum speed on almost all the roads is 90 kph.

It's very different on the mainland, where you may be stuck in endless traffic jams on the daily commute; driving for 6 hours along motorways; constantly changing up and down the gears, stopping at lights every 100 metres... There, you need something that's going to give comfort and reliability. When I lived in France, which has the same driving conditions as mainland Spain, I bought a new car every few years. The one I brought with me is 3 years old now and I can't see any reason at all to change it in the foreseeable future. If it keeps working, I'll keep driving it, regardless of the economic climate.

Always laughed in Fuerteventura with new cars, it's rare to find one without a dent in the door where someone has hit it with theirs whilst loading their shopping in the car or something like that.

Even if I had the money over there I would never invest in a new one.

It's not greatly different from the UK, where around 40% of cars are over 10 years old, and the percentage is increasing rapidly.
