Well I have just come back from 4 weeks in Fuerteventura, 2 weeks in Caleta and 2 weeks in Corralejo and having driven over 1000 kilometers I did not notice this massive increase in police presence. There was the regular police presence by certain roundabouts but nothing different from the norm.

Maybe its because I abide by the speed limits, park where I should and generally drive carefully but I have only been stopped once in 15 years and that was a road block coming into Corralejo. Once they saw the kids in the back they waved me on.

That's always been my experience as well. Normally if you get done, you've done wrong!

Mind you even though we always hire a car don't use it too much. Usually bit disorientated just off plane so drive like a pensioner to place we stay, then car sits outside for a week or so till we go to El Cottilo for a Coffee. Only drama is the steep slope in the Supermarket in Corralejo. -:)

We always use the Mercadona now, no drama there, lovely big car park ;)

I assume by the supermarket with the steep slope you mean the Eurospar by the bus station, agree with you about it being daunting. You would be better parking in the underground Hiperdino car park just across the road from the Eurospar one, its much better access and always plenty of space, you only have to walk a short distance after shopping in Eurospar without the fairground ride.

My husband managed to drive in the UK for 20+ years without ever being notice by the police or having points on his licence, yet managed to get a speeding fine in Corralejo very shortly after he arrived (stopped after being was stuck behind a very slow lorry).  He paid the fine quickly as the police told him there was a special rate for foreigners that week.  Hmmmm.
