Just returned from El Cotillo, Love it, had a lovely holiday again, we have been coming to the island for the past 10 years now and never had any problems.

But beware, our car was broken into on the first day, parked up at the lagoon beaches. We were later told its a couple of men driving around in a Gold Fiat and that it was happening in Correlejo too, kite equipment stolen.

It seems nearly every small car along the laggoons had there driver door wrenched open, there was nothing to pinch, we never leave anything in the car.

The car rental firm did not seem too concerned, stated its happening all the time now? and the police know about it.

There is another story about this lower down the page.

Trouble is Police only go to El Cotillo when they need to or there are some drivers to catch..........and the villians know it  ::)

Gess it easier for them to just hang out at roundabouts and pull people over randomly than go to areas where they know crime is being committed  >:(

LOL! Yesterday I was in a bar where there were two uniformed Policemen watching TV(Formula 1), after about half an hour they left then spent another half an hour, talking to some friends.  Another busy day at the office I thought!!

Come on it was a training excercise video on how to drive their cars at break neck speed.    Then they followed it up with a discussion on how they can put it into practice.    You did not just think that they were there enjoying themselves, surely not. ;D :D ;D

Last year had a few nights in Pajara and we were in a bar when one of the local cops came in complete in uniform, gun etc and stood drinking brandy after brandy for about an hour, in that time he took some calls on his radio, so must have been on duty.   Then he walked out and jumped into the police car parked outside.

Another clear case of rule for us and rules for them Dan.  >:(

Same here to some degree.

I have often sat in the La Luna when the Police have parked on the Zebra Crossing and came in for a drink. The Guardia often hold there meetings about what motorists to catch in the El Campanario, I have seen up to seven at a time sitting around, obviously on duty as they seem to take radio calls. It doesnt really bother me, its just the way it is down here.

You mention the Police and Pajara - WELL
1)We reported a couple of suspicious looking characters [stripped tee shirts, masks, big black bag with "SWAG" written on it] in a car park in the mountains, near Pajara, where we lived for some years. They were there every day that we took the dogs for a walk. They used various car hire cars and we began to record their car registration numbers and hire companies. One day they even threatened us for looking at them - fortunately I explained I was English and didn't understand! We used the Guardia Civil web site to notify them of events. We soon heard from an officer in Morro Jable and a few days later the two guys dissappeared - they've never to be seen again!
2) A case of domestic violence in Pajara - the bully was taken away by the Guardia after two warnings and he was sent to prison for 18 months
3) Lets see how long it is before they get the robber that stole the money box from the church in Pajara.

By the way, I've been here a few years now and have never been fined nor imprisoned - - -YET!
I'm fine with Traffico stopping me for a random breath test. I saw a couple killed by a drunk lorry driver at 4.30 in the afternoon, near Barcelona a few years ago, when liquid lunches were the norm.
PS - if you do have a problem call 112 - they speak Spanish, English and German, just like the 999 service in the UK!
