New Road, Caldereta to Corralejo

There has been no work this week on the new road , and all of the plant and machinery, has been removed. There is absolutely nothing  left. Anyone know anything about what's happening.

Everyone around here seems to be busy on post-rain repairs: road surfaces, road markings (do they use water paint???), drains... Could it be that there was major damage to roads in some places?

Hi Sheila, No this is the brand new road that is in the process of being built. Nowhere near roadmarkings etc yet. Tarmac has not been completely laid yet.

I think the suggestion  was that resources have been temporarily diverted to urgent repairs elsewhere, bridlife

Well, lets hope that's the case .  We dont want another project half finished. It has previously been mentioned that money for this road, had been diverted to other projects in the Canaries, or mainland Spain.

Bad news.  The funding for completing the new road in 2013 has been cut from €10.3million to just €110,000.  As you say, birdlife, yet another project half finished.

Mind you, given that there is a layer of tarmac on nearly all of the new stretch, what's the betting that locals will soon start using it anyway. I might try it myself when I am back in the new year.

I have little doubt also, that the speed restrictions from the outskirts of Correlejo to beyond Tamaragua will remain as will the other Guardia scam of charging E50 if you havent got your headlights on, even if there is now no roadworks or dust

What a scandal, I am not sure  €100,000 will be enough to get much further with this road. So I would not worry about speeding on it, at the moment. How can they cut what was essentialy European funding.

Probably the €100,000 will be used to block all the possible accesses to the new road and then will probably cost about €500k to remove them if they ever start on the road again.

I'm not really sure how much 100,000 € would buy, but I fear it might be just enough to do the worst possible thing.

The tarmac is down on most of the route, so maybe they'll finish it between Caldereta and Tamaragua, and put some boulders across the road at each end of the dunes. Then absolutely everything will come along the new road from Puerto and it'll all have to use that single road for the last 2-3 km into Corralejo, where it'll split 3 ways at the roundabout there. I know there won't be enough to make the motorway busy (the island doesn't need a motorway anywhere, IMHO), but there'll be enough arriving at 120kph to snarl up that last bit pretty much constantly. I believe the big chunk of work left to do is a new road between Tam and Corralejo, to spread the load. There are signs both 'in the flesh' and on Google Earth, but the terrain is crazily pock-marked.

At least most of the drive will be fast and furious from Puerto, so the overall journey time may not deteriorate, but our 5-minute trip between Tam and town would likely triple.

Lets hope your right Sheila. If they could just complete the road from Caldereta to Tamaragua, it would be good. I doubt if the money allocated could do more than this, and even this is stretching it, I believe.

110k is not nearly enough to finish the Caldereta-Lajares section.  It would need barriers and signage, a final coat of tarmac and line painting, and the numerous overpasses would also need protective barriers.  There are chunks missing at most of the juctions, too.

I guess it all may depend on what is left in the 2012 buget. I am not sure if their financial years ends 31st March , like our's.

New news
There seems to be 7m euros prepaid to the contractors as well as the 110,000 allocated next year, so there may be a bit more progress.  They say the road is 73% finished, so with the original budget of about 55m, it would need 14m to fully complete. Budget year is Jan-Dec in the Canaries.

Good news. I read in the free paper 'Fuertextra', that 18 million has now been allocated to complete the secton of the road, from Caldereta to Corralejo. This follows a meeting between the Canarian government, and officials from Fuerteventura. Lets hope they are right.
