Sadly I have to work on Sunday 11th November this year - so shall miss my yearly trip to the cliffs in Ajuy for a few minutes of reflection. There will be a new home made poppy at the top of the cliff path if you'd like to visit and add your thoughts
My dad was in the Royal Navy during World War 2. He is still alive in his 90's. He was on corvettes, little trawler like boats that got tossed about in the Atlantic trying to protect the convoys. The U-Boats could go faster than a corvette! He was then on Arctic convoys where the fear was not being blown up but dying in the freezing seas if the boat sank!
He's watched as most of his friends have died and there are now just a few of his sea mates left
Arthur Brace, my brother in laws father died last week aged 93. He was a Spitfire pilot during the war but not armed with guns, just a camera, as he was part of an observations squadron. He few over enemy territory and relied on height and speed to escape the enemy fighters
They were another breed - lest we forget
On a coach party last week from Jandia I had the pleasure to meet a young British soldier on holiday with his Canadian girl friend. He was back from Afghanistan only two weeks previously. We drove passed the Spanish army range near Pajara where young Spanish boys train before they go to Afghanistan too. I was please to be able to thank him for putting his life on the line for me, my family and my home Country - lest we forget
Why not start a thread here with any anecdotes you may have about servicemen past or present as our own tribute to them whether they be dead or alive

It was very special for us to be with Paul & Susan on the clifftop at Ajuy last year,it's a shame we can't be there this year. My father and uncles all fought in ww2 but they never spoke about it. I know a few mums who's sons are now fighting in Afghanistan and see their worry and concern. We owe so much to all those who fight for freedom for all people and I will wear my poppy with pride this year as always.

Can you please tell me what the format is regarding Remembrance Sunday at Ajuy.  I have previously watched the service on TV but would be interested in going to Ajuy this year.

There is no format - we just meet and reflect for a few minutes. We're not religious but just think it important to remember. Standing on the cliffs at Ajuy looking out over the Atlantic Ocean is a perfect place to do this

I know I can't make it this year at 11am but I'm thinking about meeting at sunset - weather permitting. The sky looking west from Ajuy is unimaginable some evenings, so it could be extra special
