Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum, myself and my family have been coming to Fuerteventura for the past 12 years, we just love it so much. We always come in winter with our next break booked in January for 2 weeks.
We always book villas as this suits us perfectly. Pool, BBQ oh and some Penason/Don Simon Sangria!!
We have to make sure that we are only a few minutes walk from the El Campanario centre as its just chilled, child friendly, enough going on. The new Botanical gardens and the scate ramp are near by for the kids.

Cant fault the island.

The botanical garden soon became a disgusting dog`s toilet I`m sorry to say, it was a nice idea ruined by the selfish and lazy.

Sure is Fi, I must go in there for summat most days, use the supermarket and Boardriders do good food. I just wish some of the empty units would get taken, I just cannot understand the logic of building yet another commercial centre ( where the trampolines used to be) when there are so many empty units in the existing commercial centres.

Boardriders is definitely a "must visit" in the centre as the food is excellent. We walk through most nights just to see the live music acts that play in the little square, they are vary varied and always entertaining.  Also there was a childrens play area upstairs and a circus time was advertised so we avoided that but can see it being a good idea for families. Some of the shops have closed down since our last visit in March but there are some new ones like the Deli that stocks some English products and some M&S things if you are missing them although we prefer trying the local produce when on holiday but it might be good for the ex-pats who live there.  Still love going up the clock tower for the amazing views and the supermarket is very handy.  I agree with ZZ  about the Botanical Gardens, the dog dirt is disgusting and must be a health hazard.  Also the water in the water features was stagnant and full of weeds and litter when we were over in Sept and a lot of the plants looked dead or very neglected.  It was so bad we didn't even bother to walk the path up the mound to get the views across to the harbour and Lanza.

Oh dear, not liking the sound of the Botanical Gardens being used as a fouling spot! it was fairly new when we were last there in March and seemed nice what with the childrens play area.

I don't know why they spend money on something and then just let it get ruined.

It's the same in the new square in Caleta, the plants and trees looked half dead when we were there in May. They put all the irrigation pipes in but they never seem to be on.

Yep, I'm in El Campanario every day myself for one reason or another, as we live about 3 mins away. There is a great atmosphere when the Canarian musicians play, it's just a great chill-out place really.

I'm with ZZ on the new one being built where the crazy golf was. Seems crazy building it opposite Las Palmeras too. Like ZZ says, there's so many empty units in the other CC's, plus there's the Miranda Center opposite Bahia Real which is completely empty.

All our family who've been over to visit have loved El Campanario too.

I am told it a way for the Majareros to do something with their black money they normally keep under the matteress.   

Until a building has been totally finished and completion certificate etc issued it does not incurr council type tax etc.   And at this time of less building work going on they can get cheap deals on the construction.

Campanario has quite a few new businesses. There are flowers and chocolates/clothing shops/sports store/Almarena cafe/Bar Jellyfish/Arcade/supermarket/Arts/sun glasses/ladies underwear/toy store/surf shops/bike and tours/marumba (m&s stuff)/pizza bar/Vodafone/shoe shop/kids area/entertainment/Cuban bar/Markets etc etc so much more than people give it credit for. Don't forget the Xmas lights are the best on the island and are currently going up. Could of course be more however considering the economy all over the EC it ain't doing too bad

Some other things:

- There are at least two sets of spotless loos down in the garage area
- There's a woman in the garage who will clean your car, outside and/or inside while you're enjoying the music etc. upstairs. I've never gone in for 'luxuries' like that before, but the cheapest car-wash where I used to live cost 5 €, so I consider 6 € (+tip) well spent when it's done with care and attention so your wing mirrors and aerial don't get broken. Besides, with the amount of dust in the air, cars here get positively dangerous to drive if the windows aren't kept reasonably clean.
- The British supermarket is just across the road. Now, I can't see the interest of coming here part-time and spending time there, but for those of us who left the UK nearly 20 years ago, it is nice to have access to pork-pies and custard, though not necessarily on the same plate

We too love the Saturday flea market and Sunday market at Campanario. Love to sit and have a coffee with friends and 'people watch' for a while.

Hi Zed - Just been for a walk around the botanical garden and was surprised how tidy it was. Only evidence of one dog mess and a couple of empty plastic bottles. This is the first time we have walked around it and I noticed that there are waste bins and bins for dog mess but not sure if these are a recent addition

Well that`s a change for the better then. The Bristol Playa promenade was well equipped with free bags and bins when it first opened but the bags all got used up and never replaced and the bins never got emptied, they were just left to rust away. Not the this removes the onus from the dog owners to do the responsible thing and clean up after their dogs and not leave it for someone else to deal with.

Does anyone know if the road from Tamarido up to the supermarket has been cleaned up. When we came over in April we had a walk up and was nearly sick with the smell of all the dog mess in the gravel borders that locals must think is a litter tray

Sorry to say but we were over in September and walked along that very road and it was absolutely awful. The stench was gut wrenching especially in the very hot, windless days we had then.  We also walked on the path at the side of the dunes that runs past the sides/rear of the properties all the way up to the Bahia Azul and the golf course and that was worse. I think the problem has got a lot worse since dogs were banned from the dunes although we did see a lot of owners on the dunes at night time.  It is a huge health hazard and a problem that really needs to be addressed.

Actually, I don't know that our four-footed friends are entirely to blame. I don't have all the facts, so I could have got it wrong, but sanitary inspectors have been spending a lot of time over the last few weeks with their heads literally stuck down the drains on the roundabout just outside El Campenario. There is indeed a nauseating smell down that road, which got much worse after the other Sunday night's rain. They actually closed off part of the road yesterday morning - don't know why but they had cordoned off the part outside the Guardia Civile.

When I originally posted this thread I was hoping for lovely comments about El Campanario and the surrounding area, not about the stench of dog mess and human waste!!!

Lets hope its sorted before our arrival in January.

They actually closed off part of the road yesterday morning - don't know why but they had cordoned off the part outside the Guardia Civile.

Maybe thats because the Guardia are all sh*t

The smell on the roundabout is always there, just past the bus stop by Playa Park. I have seen what looks like drainage / plumbing equipment in the car park of the Guardia. Think they must have had some kind of problem after all the rain.

The worst place for stench is at bottom of the path that runs up the Parque Natural, by Oasis Tamarindo.
