The Bicycle lane in Caleta is to be extended to Las Salinas. The project is being funded by a grant of €259,000 from the Ministry of Tourism. :)

It wouldn´t be a bad idea to spend that money on renovating Caleta Beach first. How come the Minestry of Tourism has money when nobody else has. :'(

Who on earth makes these bewilderingly stupid decisions?  Quite right Woe, the beach should come first on the "to do" list!

They just don't get it do they? :( :( :(

If you want to be impressed pop over to Antigua and look at the sports facilities, the beach is way down the pecking order it can not been seen as people drive past Caleta  the new bus station  is in view but hey its there island they can do as they like. Bugger all  to do with us immigrants pay your taxes and keep smiling. ;D ;D ;D

I'm personllay not against the cycleway, but like many I feel that in the present economic climate the money would be better spent elsewhere.
The existing cycleways already cause problems for pedestrians:-
the section leaving the harbour heading towards Nuevo appears to have a tarmac route which I assume is intended for cylcilsts, but there are no markings to indicate this - a few simple markings would be a great help in separating cyclists from pedestrians and making it better for both groups - I'm sure that;s what is intended.
The path around the beach is really is not wide enough for cyclists and pedestrains to mix safely, it's bad enough trying to walk past dawdling families who take up the full width of the pavements and refuse to budge without also having to look out for speeding cyclists approaching, especially  from the rear.
The pathway to Salinas is already there for cyclists, it just needs a simple bridge across the barranco and minor inprovements at the Salinas end - needn't cost anywhere near €259,000!

An Archaeology museum on the way too....

Translated....

President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Mario Cabrera, reported that "in the coming weeks, will be important also hiring plans for the island including the Archaeological Museum of Betancuria Island, the Mirador de los Canarios designed by artist Pepe Damaso and Tindaya Upper House, that if we combine the work of the Technology Park, a sizable investment in cultural infrastructure, science and infrastructure, which will help further boost. "Despite the economic crisis and budget cuts from the City Council is undertaking a major investment effort to push through key projects for the island to help boost the tourism sector and the economy.

Looks like the beach is definitely not considered a key project. :(

.....and then there is the refurbishment of the Castle..........

I think the bycycle lane would also be of benefit to the new school which is planned for that area. My husband and I are convinced there is a little man in some office whom we call the Joiner Upper. At some stage he comes along and joins all the dots on what seems to be odd decisions. This time it's the cycle land leading to the new school. It makes more sense when you put the school into the equation.

fifi

Is the school supposed to be built in Las Salinas Anne? I would say you are probably right so.

It´s not like they really "need" a cyclist lane. Caleta isn´t exactly over-run with cyclists. I wonder who´ll get the contract for this ??,

I am not" against "the cycle lane and if it will help the future school project then fine, but it they want to bring in more tourists then seems to me the beach should be a priority - the Caleta beach is not an attraction in the state it is now, must be the worst on the Island, can't they see that?  Without a decent beach which will continue to attract the tourists what's the future for Caleta going to be?  Just another run down town and even more struggling businesses. :'(

The site for the school is near the Las Salinas Golf course. When it will be built though is another thing.

Captain Sensible

How many cyclists use the cycle path betweem the Castillo Roundabout and the Atlantico Centre?  Not many, so extending it to Las Salinas is a waste of money.  Those on mountain bikes use the beach track.

The land for the school has been allocated between the two golf courses, but I can't imagine it will ever be built.  The schools in El Matorral and Antigua have been extended, and that's where the local children get the free school bus to.  The Canarian Education Dept are reducing teacher numbers so a new school will be well down on their priority list.

Exactly Captain. Nobody would use a track that goes along the main road, when there´s a perfectly good hard-packed dirt track that goes along the coast. As has already been said, what is needed is a short foot-bridge, 25 metres at most, to go across the Barranco at the South end of Elba Sara Hotel. That can´t cost much. I´m sure there are a lot of British Builders here who could build it really cheap without half the money going in their back pocket.
