I need help.....seriously.

Oh what a day I had yesterday. 

It had a nice beginning.   I opened my emails with the sun shining in my window and typed a few replies to friends over a leisurely cup of tea. Time for the online newspapers now, I thought, and ready to inform myself about what was going on in the place of my dreams I typed the first one into Google.

It all went dramatically downhill after that.

I heard a little sizzling noise. Oh no....this cant be happening to me.  I  nearly had a seizure.....my photos....my music....my internet....  It was about to be one of the worst days I have experienced.  My LIFE as an internet addict was about to be DESTROYED. 

It got worse. Backups....oh no....I always said I would....but did I? No. Sweat teaming down my brow I switched off my beloved laptop so it would not get fried.

The relief started to set in. I think I have saved it ....well I hope I have saved it, I thought to myself, but what will  I do without it? My instant Google gratification had been taken away and I did not have the answer.

I decided it was time for the begging process to begin.  My laptop lead is sizzling ....Please may I borrow yours....just for a minute....yes really I will just be a minute, I said to my sons. They looked at me in horror. I was attempting to take their internet joy away and I knew I needed a very good reason inorder to succeed.

I only need it for a minute, I said, knowing that I would actually hog one for the day and night given half a chance. They looked at me in disbelief. Honestly....just a minute...and I will give it back.

Phew ....it worked. Thank God for that. Why go traipsing around town looking for the right laptop lead when I can source one on the internet?  Oh, I was so in love with that keyboard. The sound of my fingers typing was like music to my ears. Pure joy. Laptopleads.ie....eureeka ive found it....the exact make and model....next day delivery...woo hoo....I was in ecstasy.

I am delighted to say that true to their word my beautiful new eagerly awaited lead arrived in its nice brown jiffy bag first thing this morning.  I am a happy woman.

I need help. Seriously.

I have one of those external data storage devices fifi, and you can set it up to auto backup every day if you like. Wonderful things and has mair memory than me

Thanks Kenny. I really must get one. Western Digital do a fantastic little one called My Passport and you can store hundreds of films on it and its  only a little bit bigger than a phone. Brilliant for storing films to bring away and saving all the important stuff.

I will put it on my to do list.

Tesco do a one terrabyte one quite reasonable, enough for most peoples needs, I got one ages ago and there is plenty of room for everything.

Had it happen to me 3 times in the past, one PC and two lappys, lost loads of lovely photos of my lad when he was a baby / toddler, not to mention shed loads of music etc. Ended up getting an external HD as I just coudn't bear the thought of it happening all over again. The sense of loss you get, when it starts to dawn on you just exactly what you've lost, is not a nice feeling at all.

Pictures: Walk to the Chemist in the rain, leave FILM spool, walk bacK home or to car in said rain. Go back a week later (possible more rain or even snow!) pick up pictures and organise a night with friends to show them said pictures, put them away safely for when Aunty Agnes pays a visit.

Music: pay lots of money for a single/album plastic round thing and store said plastic discs in large box - usualy in a spare room or up int atic , play them when the needle has been replaced on the record player. Place back in box for a rainy day, possibly 30 years later.

Thats how we did it in the good old days.

Games:  Play with toy cars - making pretend roads in the mud.  Getting dress torn climbing a tree.  Pretending that the mysterious buildings at the end of the wood is a lunatic asylum and run away screaming whenever anyone appears.  Get Sindy to have an affair with your brothers Action man.  Making a dolls house out of cardboard boxes.  Ah, those were the days!

My daughter thinks we didn't have any fun when we were younger and were seriously disadvantaged by not having Playstations, X-Boxes and I-pads.

Im glad yourself and the rest of the bar enjoyed looking at my little puppies.

My done list is very short. My to do list on the other hand is very long. Passing my driving test has been on it for 22 years.

Its dreadful to lose the photos Carlo.  It happened to me twice when I fried my last two laptops. I really should learn by my mistakes.

Gosh I never knew Sindy had it in her. Now Barbie on the other hand.......

I preferred Action man and I used to climb trees with him and loved watching him do his parachute jumps. I used to knit him little outfits.

When I was little I lived  in fantasy land most of the time. My life was like Felicity Kendalls in the good life. Big house, posh family, (although im not a poshie) and not a penny because I lived with my Granny.  We grew absoloutely everything and what we couldnt grow was either fished or hunted. .... a lovely way to grow up actually.....

Dont know about passing on to your friends. I use it for office stuff and I can access it from my laptop and phone if needed. Once you scan/load/change something it goes directly into it.

Take glass plate to chemist, catch tram back home, go back a month later and marvel at those new fashioned photograph things, place them carefully in an album and put away until they re-emerge in some auction house.
Pay lots of Pound shillings and pence for one of those new invention wax rolls, take it safely home and put it on a phonograph and listen in amazement to the sounds that emerge from the horn, once again put carefully away until it all emerges in some auction house.
Now thats the way it was done. lol

Dont know about passing on to your friends. I use it for office stuff and I can access it from my laptop and phone if needed. Once you scan/load/change something it goes directly into it.

I've got the entire contents of my documents directory on Dropbox! There are public areas for exchanging photos etc, areas to put things so you can just give the website address to anyone who needs to access the file (useful for CV etc) and then you can set up shared areas with other Dropbox users so you can both work on the same file, and then there's the truly private areas that only you can look at.

You can access your files via the Dropbox website from any internet café or borrowed computer. You can download it on your other computers (laptop etc) and to your smartphone so that all your files are instantly accessible there too, and kept in sync. No multiple copies of things to totally confuse you.

No danger of losing the files really as Dropbox keeps various copies in various locations (all very securely). But they don't give you access to past versions (I don't believe), so you'd still need to do backups if you want to be able to recover something if you screw up.

I was without a computer for a while when I was moving over here, and I work using the internet (translating and editing) so it could have been a major disaster. But I was able to limp along using internet cafés and my smartphone to access client data etc. Saved the day for me, I can tell you!

Easy!

1) Raided NAS (Box with hard drives)
2) Permanently Attached external hard drive
3)Another external hard drive for Ad-hoc backups and stored off-site
4) Microsoft Sync Toy. Where it went wrong!

Then you are sorted till you delete files on Sync push and all of your hard taken photos ate "Sync Deleted"

Seriously though we now need to back s*** up, so best thing is external drive with sync toy, but always set it up just o copy from main device not replicate.
