All these Fiestas (there's one today) and Siestas are keeping Spain at the BOTTOM of the European Un-employment League Table.

Dead right woe.And that position in the unemployed league table is even without the diabolical benefits mattress the Uk's idle jacks have to rely on. How the hell do all these unemployed youths of Europe manage to live.

Not sure that the table is giving the full story. Malta in at No3?  They have a Fiesta on the island every night of the week according to a local that I spoke to.  The huge booms from their somewhat unorthodox fireworks, seemed to confirm this.

Other factors, such as population size & how honest each nation is when it comes to counting the unemployed, play a part. Thatcher used to change the counting method like clockwork. Blair hid youth unemployment by stashing young people into Uni, doing coursed that had no value to an employer,

If you want to see a country that grinds to a halt due to public holidays, try Trinidad & Tobago.  It's a melting pot of different cultures so everyone takes each other's religious events. Nothing much of value gets done for around three weeks either side of Carnival. Add all that together with no concept of time keeping and I a m surprised that the whole place is not bankrupt

Spain actually has the second best growth in Europe and is poised to become the second biggest economy by about 2023. (I posted this several years ago)

Unemployment stats are a red herring due to the high amount of black money (officially 30% of GDP in Canarias; probably about 70% in Fuerteventura).

The doom and gloom peddled by the foreign media, is illinformed rubbish.

Spaniards in business and government play their cards very close to their chest. Immensely clever at fooling everyone else.

According to trading economy, youth unemployment across Spain has dropped from 43.1% in August 2016 to 38.6% as of June 2017. Seen the stats by more than one economist.... thats a lot of youths out of work whether its in Madrid or Puerto De Rosario. Sorry butI tend to believe the media's assessments rather than a forum opinion.

Your spot on Calculator, since when has Spain taking any notice or really been part of the EU except when there is something in it for them, employment figures are a myth, the black economy and corruption are part and parcel of the Spanish culture, and it works, and its getting better, and they do it very, very well. People in the UK who haven't really experienced how other major European economies embrace the EU at ground level honestly think we are leaving a political, democratic hard working, functioning system were all countries embrace the rubbish that's churned out by the overpaid bureaucrats of Brussels, it couldn't be further from the truth. I don't lose sleep over it, I left the sheep a long time ago when I realised the real state of play, and I thank Spain for teaching me so many expensive lessons.

I think most people are more than aware of EU corruption especially in Britain. They like to make large of the notion that most of us voted to leave because of the immigration factor, but many I know voted the way they did because they did not want their hard earned taxes disappearing down an unaccountable black hole of greed and self serving gratification by a corrupt organization that refuses to keep good accounts. It suits the British Establishment liberal classes to continue the deceit as the racism charge can always be brought to bear in any dispute over membership. Spain will never be a major European force economically while their level of corruption remains the same. You always get found out in the end ..as the EU has found, to what will be it's cost.
