The ferry Volcan de Tamasite with 140 passengers suffered engine failure and smashed with the dock in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. At least 10 people from the passengers were injured during the accident and were hospitalized for medical treatment. There were no serious injuries and almost all of them were released for home treatment. The ferry Volcan de Tamasite suffered serious damages, but remained afloat. All the passengers were evacuated from the damaged ferry to the shore. The local authorities were informed about the accident and sent rescuers and boats at the scene, which assisted the vessel and people on board.



The dock suffered serious damages during the collision. Also several fuel pipes on the breakwater were ruptured, which pushed the local authorities to declare emergency for risk of marine pollution to the cities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Telde, where almost half a million people live.

“The spill initially motivated the activation of the National Maritime Plan, but at this time the name level of the emergency has been lowered to insular scale and its coordination therefore corresponds to the Cabildo de Gran Canaria”, said the official statement of Canary Islands Government.

A dilemma for the master, but if out of control, she had to be stopped. On the scale of things, looks like a pretty good outcome.
