Non Resident Car Buying

Another topic where there seems to be a difference of opinion as to what paper work you need.

Have any of you non residents bought a car and if so did you manage it without a 'padron' and did you need an 'updated' NIE or was your original sufficient?

I will probably be buying before I become resident, Brexit negotiations permitting, and will probably get one from Gran Canaria as the prices are lower and the choice bigger, hence the question.

I think it depends on who you buy from. I bought from Orvecame and I definitely needed pardon, however I think someone told me that if you bought from Aboutcars you don't.

I am non resident, bought my car about 5 years ago, needed Padron/NIE/ Passport.

What's happening here in the islands with the padron? I know there are some places on the mainland where you can't possibly get onto the register if you aren't residents; and others where non-residents who own properties are routinely registered. I remember being on it here before getting residency, but that was back in 2012. Worth trying to get onto it, I'd think, particularly if permanent residency is your plan.

The 3-month limit on the NIE only applied for a short while. Ones issued nowadays don't have an expiry date, any more than the ones issued a while back. Someone's "good idea", no doubt. So if you're unlucky enough to have one with an expiry date then the worst that will happen is that you exchange it for an undated one (costs about â,¬10 max]. The rules do state that they should accept any and every NIE, but not everybody reads the rule book.

I think my best bet is to attempt to sign on to the Padron just before buying a car.

My NIE is from 2008 so has no end date. I have used it for a couple of things such as phone and utility  changes and no problems so far, cue Spanish Red Tape Video.

Anyone who has a property here should register on the Padron - it's not a legal requirement, but the Ayuntamiento get funds from Central Government for everyone who is registered on the Padron.  The more people that are registered means that the Ayuntamiento can spend on local services.

Could someone explain what this padron is please? Never heard of it but own a property on the island so should we have one and if so how do we arrange this. Thanks.

Padron is abreviation for Empadronamento. Basically the local municapilty census of persons living in their area. Register of electors in the uk.
When I went, they asked if I wanted to register for voting etc.
The also asked if you are 'resident' full-time, so they can make a note of your uk address, if not.
I also ticked a box telling them I needed it to buy a car.

After a few days we got a visit from an official checking we did actually have the house we had registered. Easy.

As someone previously mentioned, they are happy to register you, as they get funding from central government.

Apart fron the Ayuntamiento getting funds, and needing one to buy a car, what if any other benefits are there from registering? Does it need to be renewed?

If you have residencia you can also get a certificate for discounted travel (within Spain) and some attractions on the island, but I think that has to be renewed every three months or so.  If you are non resident, can only get the part of it for car purchase not discounts on other things. As far as I know the actual padron registration does not need to be renewed once registered.

Unless you register as full-time resident, you can't get the travel concession, but you can get in the Oasis Park for half price! 

And you'll be able to drive to their new waterpark in your new car (if it ever happens)

I live in the La Oliva district, and it costs an arm and a leg to get the travel document; yes, I'm talking about a whole 1 euro 50 cents, and it only lasts for 6 months !! and thats per person, not the whole family.


A smidgeon of tongue in cheek here; but the numbers are right for La Oliva.
I think its only 50 centimos per person in Antigua council area(ie Caletaville)

Lucky our place is in Caletaville then.    And I know a bar where I can get a large San Miguel for â,¬1 so win, win.

Seriously though, I'll look into that for the discounted travel to GC and back when I go to buy a car.

If you register with the Ayuntamiento to do your empadronamiento online, you can print a new copy whenever you need one at no cost. Each member of your family needs to register online separately. Very useful if you make spur of the moment travel plans and find your old form is 6 months and 1 day old!
