Electrical Advice

During the thunder storm this afternoon we lost power in our bungalow. After resetting the fuse box all fine except the power points in the lounge which will not reset even with nothing plugged in

Not very convenient time -have to resort to the iPad for the football!

Does anybody have any tips to restore the power ?

I guess something has got wet. Do you have any outside power points on the same circuit?
When my outside sockets kept tripping, I located the culprit socket and disconnected it under the distribution cover. That's the advantage of the 'radial' method they use here. One socket can be isolated easily.
Otherwise, wait 'til it dries out and try again.

Talking about reset the fuses or the rcds?
Does the power point fuse jump out again or do you just don't have current there?
Or does your rcd keep flipping?
And who cares about football anyway?

Yes we have a couple of sockets outside so hopefully one of those is the culprit.


Erik, yes it is the rcd that is flipping - I did not know the technical terms as I have had a mis-spent life watching football

At the time of this post it should be the BLUE half of Manchester, but at the moment I am not a happy bunny

An extension lead and a hairdryer would be useful if it is water ingress to an outside socket.
Undo the socket so you can get the hairdryer blowing on to the connections at the back. The seals usually degrade in the sun so I would look at getting new ones.

SAFETY WARNING!!!!!!!  Make sure the power is off before working on sockets.

Thanks very much for the replies -in particular Archer who is nominated for Electrician of the Year followed closely by Deso. All systems go now -normal service resumed.

However I was a bit concerned about he football allegiances declared in a couple of posts as I like nothing more than seeing Man Utd suffer and also to a lesser extent the other half of Manchester .Todays results a little disappointing !

As a future project, I would get all the outside stuff - lights, sockets, etc put on a separate circuit and rcd. If we get heavy rain like that again, and we will, then you keep running indoors with no inconvenience.
And as Deso says, check the socket is watertight, as well.
