Just picked up on someting that was being discussed on another area of social media, some of you may have picked up on it already. Thought it might be worth opening it up for discussion, such as it can be on here  :'(

There is a growing trend for regulars to the island to come with just hand luggage but many are coming for various watersports and as such need to leave surfboards, wetsuits etc or just somewhere to store clothing and personal effects between visits to the scepted Isle.

The downside being many turn up and use transfers/taxis/public transport to and from resorts which may limit the service although there are many with hire cars who would happily call in somewhere to pick up and drop off.

This surely would`nt need the ok from any of the Island`s bent Councils or would it??..Where we stay we have that facility and its one of the reasons we return as often as we do but I`m sure there are many others who would buy into it..

  What does the audience think??

Basically a luggage storage type business. Yes?

I'd expect you would need the same business approvals that any other business needs. If you aren't in a business zone then the question becomes will your neighbors be bothered?

You would need/want insurance.

If this wasn't large scale do you want to be on call? People arrive late. Some will want to leave stuff early.

An absolute nonstarter!! The risks are enormous.

First thing you'd need is an airport style Xray machine. Otherwise, you'd eventually just be a holding centre for contraband.

Drug trafficking is a big problem, the airport being the centre point, lol.

I was thinking more on the lines of this, which seems to work well: https://www.bigyellow.co.uk/small-storage or maybe this one that can deliver as well as store:

This was brought up, tossed around and rejected years ago.

The issue would be as said before what is left with you, and how long brfore some Genius posts you something for storage, to save them having to bring it with them? opens up all sorts of issues.

Sounds a sound idea Paully, why not get the business concept sent from one of the franchises that do it in the UK i.e. insurance, business hours, terms and conditions, charging etc and see how you would go about implementing it with the space you have available. It will tie you in for the long haul, someone would always have to be available during your working hours, no problems that cant be sorted with a bit of thought. You might want to think about equipment rental tied in with the storage business i.e. golf equipment, prams, kids buggies i.e. anything that is expensive to fly with but people would want to hire. If you think about everything associated with these types of business, ie picking people up at the airport to collect their equipment etc, theres a bit of money to be made.

If your looking for other business ideas, a laundry on Tamaruagua would be a winner or a small 24 hr card entry gym on Tam also, ideas I have thought about but never done anything about it, just need a good lawyer to sort out the legalities, have a go. I went into another business sector back in the UK so only visit my place now.

Think there is call for something along the lines you are thinking.  And maybe not just luggage for example My friend has just got her xmas box of decorations from storage (at a local bar that does something similar) because often even when living here space for storing items is limited.  Good luck with your venture if you do decide to take it further.   Also location is important - before we got a car it would have been handy to store our boards somewhere near to the beach to save lugging them down there when we wanted to use them.

Well thanks so far for the replies, please keep them coming both for and against..Must clarify though that its not me proposing to start this, it was something I read on Facebook forum which was well received when published there..Hope it might be of some use to someone looking for new business ideas on the island

Storage facilities already on the island (not 24/7 self-storage though).  Short term and long term available Mon-Sun 09:00 - 17:00.  Secure (alarmed/security videos installed).  www.woodsidecargosl.com

2 years before we moved here full time, I rented a locker at the golf course to leave my clubs and also sundries, such as toilet bags etc. Cost me â,¬60 per year, but as a frequent visitor, 4/5 times per year, it was a bargain. It costs me £60 per trip to bring my clubs so it was a no brainer.

We used to have this facility in Cotillo, where they were very happy to store our suitcase between holidays (saving us £90 over three visits) but unfortunately they had to re-locate and the new premises are not large enough for them to continue with this service.  They also had items for rental (high chairs etc.) but I've no idea what the turnover was as it was all a 'bit extra on the side' to the existing business.  I think I paid â,¬20 for eight weeks storage.
