Do you need a license to buy a gas refill?

Only for your first bottle, refills i.e. swap empty for full, you don't show any paperwork.
To get a licence you just need your name, address and NIE number, so not complicated.

Hi Mr G - Thanks for that info, who issues the licence, is it the supplier of the gas bottle?

THings have changed now - All you need to do is take your passport or NIE certificate to the nearest DISA gas station that sells them and they will do the paperwork. I did this earlier this year. Unfortunately I wasn't able to do this anywhere locally in Corralejo - I had to go to the DISA station on the the La Oliva road just of the ring road round Rosario. Although local stations will exchange an empty they would not supply a new one.

PS?..you may need to get a new regulator as well. I did for my Weeber BBQ. You can get this from Marcial in Corralejo or any other good Ferretier.

I did wonder that when I bought my first one and in the middle of a BBQ ran out of gas!
I decided to get a second one the same size - much easier to handle and saves the embarrassment when having friends round! Gas is actually very cheap compared to UK at â,¬8 for 6kg which does last quite a long time.

Yes any Disa garage who sells gas bottles issue the paperwork. I used the one at Playa Blanca between the airport and Rosario.
Not really a licence , more proof of purchase of the bottle so you can get a refund if you no longer need it. It is called a Boleetin de Consignacion.
Just needed my NIE number, not original paperwork.

I have a spare so can use all the gas.

Well I tried both Corralejo and La Oliva DISA garages and they would not sell me a new one, but directed me to Rosario.

And I had yet a different experience earlier this year. None of the DISA garages (Puerto/La Oliva/Corralejo) would sell me a new bottle/issue a licence with or without any ID/NIE etc. I had to fax a copy of my receipt for the purchase of a patio heater to a place in Gran Canaria! They then authorised a place (not a DISA garage) in Corralejo to issue my first bottle. It was actually a little tobacco shop opposite the Shell garage down in the town who issued me my bottle from a back room! I was told I can then exchange it for a refill anywhere that does them - they just do the originals!
Totally different from the process for the bottle for my BBQ where I got my 'licence' from DISA in Puerto 5 years ago.

Very strange this....I headed off the Rosario ring road towards la Oliva. There's 2 DISA garages opposite each other. The one on the rhs leaving Rosario has a large office. I went in there with passport and they issued the paperwork and 1st bottle. I then went back a couple of months later with the paperwork and they gave me more paperwork and a second gas bottle. Very helpful people even though I don't speak much Spanish!

I change my bottle regularly. Never show paperwork and never had any!

No. The staff filled in a simple form first time. Never had copy (thought that strange at the time - no deposit back!). And never asked to show anything since.

I never have to show my paperwork when I change the bottle....done is in both DISA garage in Corralejo and the Ferreteria in Villa Verde. As I said earlier I think the licensing system has eased to make it easier.

Maybe some confusion here between license and contract. To get a 14kg metal bottle from Disa you need to obtain a licence from them, then a contract. For the smaller 5kg plastic type bottles you do not need a license, just a contract. Contract is easily done at petrol stations, license from Disa office in Rosario. Hope that helps.
