The apartment I usually stay in must think they've gone 5* as we usually pay £30ish per night..looked at a break for next month and see they're nearly £80 a night   :o So looked around and saw an aparment in mid town Caleta for an ok price.. reserved it, then next day went back to re-check details.. and saw in tiny print that the price did not include £40 'cleaning charges' ... eh ? So if I dont want to pay this I go there to dirty sheets, a sink full of washing up, ant infested floors etc etc (I did note that on the pluses it said they supplied cleaning products... I do not go on holiday to cook or clean lol ) Is this normal ? I've always stayed in complexes before where sheets & towels are changed daily as well as maid service obviously (except Sundays)
Anyway I cancelled and got a week in the old but reliable  Peurto Caleta for £200 for the 2 of us for a week. (£100 cheaper than the 'clean it yourself' place.
My main point is.... is it usual to tack a £40 'cleaning charge' on top of the advertised price? (This was with booking.com btw.)

And purleeese Spike / erik etc etc don't blame brexit..as I got my basic 'put your head down, sleep, shower, leave room for the day'  apartment for just a tad over £200...

You see it often in smaller owner  places. The big complexes have staff that work no matter what . Small places need to hire somebody to do these things.

In the end you're always paying for this stuff. Some include it in the price. Some charge on top.

Yes Hev, its becoming much more prevelant, especially on the Mainland..some cleaning prices are reasonable whereas as others are just  :o...Like you I don`t like extras hidden in the small print and I won`t use them either, so well done you  ;D.....I don`t mind it being worked into the final price, fair enough, its the adds on that really annoy me..
I HATE computer thingyss

Its like anything hev. supply and demand. Now the canaries are attracting tourists from other destinations owners will up the prices and put it down to 'running costs' when it is no such thing. Its just taking advantage of the situation. As for brexit if you can blame it for a marmite shortage you can blame it for anything. ;)

And believe me they will.  ;D

I agree Paully, wouldn't have minded if it was actually on the price that was quoted.. it was the sneaky way it was put in there.. what next?  charges for water and electricity ?
We hadn't planned on going next month but saw flights for £70 return so thought we'd get a bit of sun and take the family's Xmas pressies out too.  :) 8) 8)

This is normal in many places, especially in the US when you rent an apartment. You're not expected  to clean it yourself, it's compulsory.

It's just a way of making an extra 50 quid.
If they had a brain they could just add 50 quid to the initial price without a mention of cleaning, then people wouldn't complain.

Exactly Woe.. but it gave the lower price on booking.com for the rental.. and I didnt see it untill after I'd reserved it. It stated extra charge for internet and you expect that. Luckily I had until tomorrow to actually book the place properly. So I cancelled.

Hev was the cleaning charge payable / part of contract through bookings.com or extra direct to the owner, if extra direct to owner I can see what they are trying to do, avoid the commission to Booking.com on the cleaning element. and I think booking.com commission is 15%+

IsThisForumStillGoingWow

Ah looks like that could be it Windermeregolfer... thanks  :)

â,¬ 40 Cleaning fee per stay is excluded.

And I see further down...  This accommodation provider accepts the following forms of payment:
No credit cards accepted, cash only

I heard of someone charging guests extra for cleaning their apartment prior to arrival... I  cannot recall now if the owner was Dutch or German - so it may be more the norm if owners are not English. Personally  I cannot believe an owner would let their property out not pre-cleaned.  Obviously such work is chargeable but it should be encompassed within the rental fee.  If the guests want a clean mid-week then this is an acceptable extra cost.

We'd never book a place with a compulsory extra charge like that. And if it appeared after booking, as happened to you, we'd cancel - and tell them why.

Some extras can be optional, such as wifi, some variables such as electric can be charged, but seem very mean.

We'll only deal with honest advertisers.

When I bought my place it was as an existing 'rental business' being advertised by a German company.

It is very common for the Germans to pay separately for cleaning and they expect it. The British are astonished by this practice and I would include it as a hidden cost within the arrangement.

If you are renting for a very short period the cleaning costs are disproportional and I used to spell out how cheaply I was actually letting it. Having the costs separate and payable locally is just a different way. To my mind it just indicates that it is a German owner rather than a UK one.
