Electric Scooters to be Banned in Adeje, Tenerife.

Adeje Council in Tenerife are banning electric scooters. About time caleta Council woke up

"Adeje ban on electric scooters
The Adeje Council has approved a decree banning the use of electric vehicles on footpaths, pedestrian zones and public spaces in the borough following a number of negative reports from the Local Police and numerous others organisations and individuals, stating that “the current legal controls are insufficient to adequately meet the needs of the public and allow for a peaceful coexistence between the users of these vehicles and pedestrians”.

About time too..an absolute menace..Astonishingly they even allow them in supermarkets, nearly been run over a few times there, never mind the street..`Benidorm` has a lot to answer for  .....interestingly the hotel that started it all there, the Sol Pelicanos, banned these scooters about 3 years ago on safety grounds..

    Interestingly though, every time you see someone on them they all happen to be grotesquely obese. I wonder why???...   Them chassis must be strong.But well done to Adeje Council I hope La Oliva follows suit soon

I think they will stop short of licensing or banning them but certain regulations look like they may be implemented ie an age restriction, helmets being worn and only to be used on certain cycle paths being three of them.

I have a mate who has one although rarely uses it, got told off by the Gardia  for being on a road, allegedly they are only to be  used to kill pedestrians

"It seems that everything is in place to ban the electric scooters, the only thing missing is the signature of the secretary (who is on holiday), or the person relieving him during his absence. On Monday the councilor of tourism and the councilor of transport (who is actually the one that has made up the decree) will have a meeting with the mayor (Cazorla). So hopefully by the end of this month, all signs are put up after everything has been published in the BOC (the official Canarian law bulletin).
Once it is published in the BOC it then becomes a law."

Yesterday I had two kids no more than 11 out side Atlantico Centre riding at me on the wrong side of the road!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's down to the police to fine the riders and the businesses that send them out. Unfortunately we all know what the police are like here and it will probably take a serious accident for them to enforce it.

You'll be pleased to know that the new scooter laws came into force on the first of this month. Unfortunately nobody knows what they are because everyone at the town halls on holiday, so they're still sitting on somebody's desk somewhere.

Hi, I sent this to the voice for this month:-

Hi, I am writing to you again regarding motorised scooters (not mobility scooters) which are a scourge on this island. They are dangerous especially for old people and children. I live in Triquivijate and spend most of my leisure time in Caleta. The people who drive/ride these scooters have no idea of the speeds these scooters can produce and a lot couldn't care less anyway. The public pathway (Yes please note PUBLIC PATHWAY) between the Windmill Pub going down to the beech area is a potential accident waiting to happen.

Just the other day I was at the Sports Lounge and a 5 year old child run out of the bar onto the path in front of these idiots going far too fast on these so called 'fun scooters'. If she ran out a couple of seconds later there would have been a serious accident. You have to applaud the council in Tenerife who have banned these 'fun motorised vehicles' on footpaths, pedestrian zones and public spaces. I just hope the council in Fuerteventura and the police do something to protect the pedestrians on their island however I have no faith in either party of doing the correct thing as I consider the council and police useless. If there is a major accident I just hope the party concerned takes legal action not only against the person causing the accident but the company, police and council for negligence.

The Beer on a Bike letter to you in the August edition from SB although incorrect regarding the driver drinking (I do note that The Voice would never agree to drinking and driving) the advert does give the perception. However your reply stating that ' it is no different than enjoying a glass of wine on the plane' has a slight flaw. Planes, cars, trains and coaches are enclosed vehicles, if you look at your advert this so called bike has a bar down the middle with approx. 6 stools either side completely open and certainly not small enough to drive on a pedestrian pathway so the other alternative is the road (the advert even shows the vehicle on the road).

So lets say its on the road, car passes, person falls off the stool drunk, major accident. Please dont say the company will ensure punters are not overloaded with drink as they do not know how much the customer has had to drink before the hire of the vehicle. Who ever constructed the BarBike  must need their head testing. Again a major accident waiting to happen and the BarBike hasn't even come into play yet. So there is an opportunity of doing something about it and being pro-active. Even the train taking people around Caleta is enclosed.

Ok thats it, at the moment!!!!

I think it would be far safer and the scooter owners could still make a profit, if there was a special dedicated scooter track like there is with the Go Garts in PdR.

They could have races etc., rent safety gear, have more higher powered scooters etc......

They're supposed to wear helmets too, but it seems the people renting these things aren't bothered who they rent to. Who pays if there is a broken leg or skull, are they insured  ??

The police have called all companies renting scooters to a meeting next week to discuss what is and isn't allowed. As of yesterday it was illegal to ride one while not on a cycle route. The police have powers now to stop them and issue a fine to be payed immediately if not the scooter will be confiscated and a fee paid to release it. But, can they be bothered.

During the last year my legs seem to have given up on me with the result that after walking 200yds i have to sit down and rest for a while. So my question is there anywhere on the island where i can buy an electric scooter and a rough estimate of the cost?

I would suggest you talk to Steve at Miraflor Mobility in case he has one for sale. If he doesn't, he may be able to get hold of one for you, perhaps importing from the UK if nothing available locally.
Whatever, he will probably have the best knowledge on the subject.
