Pozo Negro

Hi All,

Does anyone know what the area about 200 metres south of Pozo Negro village is ? It is made up of green tarpaulins and caravans and appears to be a permanent settlement with no entry signs and maybe even street lights.

Any ideas ?

There is a summer caravan and camping site, officially opened about a month ago, which will be there until October, I understand. I've just been past Pozo Negro today and didn't particularly notice tarpaulins etc, although my eyes were quite firmly glued to the track going down the hill!

It's there every summer, and totally cleared away each winter.

It's mostly for the residents of Antigua and surrounding area, for their summer holidays. They don't travel abroad like the Brits do.

It is licensed by the Ayuntamiento to control numbers. Pozo means pool and Negro black, Blackpool

Pozo Negro means cesspit in Spanish, which might be an even more appropriate reference to Blackpool

Thanks for this. I guess I hadn't really considered what the locals do for their summer hols. In this case do they drive their own caravans over to PN for a few days or are the vans supplied by the government as a sort of makeshift Butlins ? Either way, I hope they and their kids enjoy the break.

Your comment about the locals not travelling abroad like we tend to do is something I hadn't really thought about even though I suppose it is fairly obvious when one considers financial constraints, difficulty getting anywhere and having good weather and a great environment every day of their lives !!  No such luxury in Blighty unfortunately so we jump on Ryanair cattle trucks at the drop of a hat....

They use their own vans, Ernie. Lots of locals like to use them in the summer - my neighbour says it is too hot to sleep at home so he takes his van to the sea just a few miles away all summer. Apparently lots of locals from Gran Canaria like to holiday in Fuerte too and some of them bring vans on the ferry. Until a few years ago you could camp anywhere, but now you need a licence, and proof that you have a chemical toilet. Still cheap though - I think it is about 65 euros for the whole summer.

In El Matorral, the old village empties in August. They're all at the beach which is accessed by dirt tracks between the Airport and the Petrol Station at Ikea.
