Have you checked the expiry date of your European Health Insurance card lately? They do not last for ever and must be renewed periodically, some people do not realise that. You can renew on line for Free, if you are asked to pay a fee then you are on the wrong site.

Yes thanks for that cockney,I do realise they don,t last for ever and have renewed them in the past but it is something easily overlooked. Shall be checking ours later.

Thanks for the reminder. Just checked mine and guess what - it is well out of date. I have applied for a new one on line which as you say is easy.

We renewed ours last month very simple online form, they only took 5 days to arrive and can confirm that they are valid for 5 years.

I'm S1 so had to renew by phone   - took five minutes. The foreign section of the MWAP are just fantastic. The boss man should be given a medal.

Just got round to checking ours today and yep it was due to expire on the 12th of next month. Been on the web sight and updated for renewal, no problem. Thanks once again cockney.

Government departments do seem to be getting better I have to say that I have just put 2 car registrations on retention and got the new V5C's (log book papers for those older folk like me) with the new registration numbers through in 36 hours and the retention papers within 4 days. :D

I used the new online service to renew our passports last year. You fill in a form and pay online, print the form and post it with the old passports and new pics.
We had new the passports within a week, I was well impressed.

That one puzzled me, too. If you are resident in Spain you are not entitled to the EHIC card issued by the UK, no ifs or buts! Sure, there are ways of getting one, but only by making a false declaration re residency.

*Whoops, forgot about the retirement age angle, as per thomo's more accurate reply, below!

If you are a UK state pensioner living in Spain and registered for healthcare with an S1, the UK is responsible for issuing your EHIC to use on a temporary stay in the UK and a third EU country. For more information, telephone the Overseas Healthcare Team on +44 191 218 1999
