Has the rat population increased? On my daily walks usually from the harbour up to Neuvo I have noticed more rats than at any other time than when I've been here previously. Yesterday there seemed to be more than ever especially on the horseshoe stretch where the walkway comes back inland. Are any measures in place to stop this vermin from spreading into the hotels/domestic areas?

Sounds like it should be reported to the Ayuntamiento or possibly Medio Ambiente.

I think they must be aware of the problems. A couple of years ago there were rats in the rocks in front of the Elba hotels and lots of chipmunks. Probably a fact that you have to get rid of both to cure the problem. For 12 months there were no chipmunks in the rocks but no rats either. The area which comes inland to the North of the hotels has been a good area for viewing chipmunks lately so maybe the rat problem comes with the chipmunks. Everybody chucking food down there is probably the answer.

A rat is just a chipmunk or squirrel  with a bald tail  ::)
