What is 10 like Woe - I'm an old Ludite, I'm using 7 at the moment so worried i might get lost and that would be a disaster

Hiya Spike. We installed it on our PC and weren't very impressed at all. We removed it and re-installed Win7 again. Like you though I'm an old Luddite so that may have had something to do with my disliking of it.

But what's it like compared to Windows 8.1? That's what I'm lumbered with on my newish laptop. I can get free upgrade, I think, but I don't want to go from the fat into the fire. I would have preferred Windows 7, that's for sure.

I never used Windows 8.1, On new laptop upgraded straight away to Windows 10 and love it.

Spike, you can upgrade free from 7 to 10 as long as you have SN. for Win 7.

Sticking with Windows 7 as it's the best OS since XP. Upgrading might cost too much as a lot of things don't work with 10 ie: printer etc. Did a lot of research before making a decision.

Not true.

If you have W7 installed, even using a bootloader which circumvents the need for a valid Serial No./Product Key, you can upgrade to W10 without the need for a key. Just skip the steps where it asks for one.

Once installed as an upgrade (check that W10 is activated), you can then download W10 to a CD/DVD/USB and do a clean install and you STILL don't need the Product Key.

Used XP then 7 (tried Vista & it was rubbish) then 8 now 10, i think it is good, no crashes, probs so far. Flows nicely & it seems to run faster on my pc

I think your "research" was a bit off. My printer, which is 5 years old, works perfectly well with Windows 10. It's HP.
Just go to the maker's website and download drivers for windows 10. Easy peasy.
In fact all my old programs are working fine, including Microsoft Word 2007.

Hairybiker, sorry, yes you are correct. I just downloaded it on another laptop which had Windows 7 on it, and it didn't ask for it. I just had to make sure it had all the latest uodates.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts - I might go 10 on one of my PC's and see how it works out. Was there any problems going from 10 back to 7? I'm worried about being left behind in an IT sense, I was a big XP fan but of course that is now old hat but still runs on a couple of our notebooks

If you really want to go back, it's easy. Go to Settings / Update & Security / Recovery.
Click the button for either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1

Worth noting that if you don't move from 7 to 10 you will find support for 7 will end in a couple of years and you will then have to pay for 10.
i have no problems with 10. I did switch off all the snoop apps as a precaution. Easy to do and plenty of advice online.
