Just back from our second trip to Fuerteventura last week (and would go back tomorrow if I could). We booked a James Villas holiday which included car hire for the week. I was a bit worried about the car hire as it was with Hertz and I had read a few negative things on here. What we ended up with was a Mini Cooper D four door and with almost every option that you can get with it. It had  a whopping eighteen kilometres on the clock, nice brand new smell and the thing went like a rocket. All we paid was â,¬6 per day to cover glass and tyres and it was otherwise fully insured. Our Nissan seemed so boring when we got home. I noticed that other Hertz cars also seemed fairly new. On our other Fuerteventura trip two years ago we had a Skoda Fabia with Avis through Holiday Autos which was good and on other Canary trips have used Cicar and Pluscar who were both good. I only bad car hire experience in the Canaries was when we booked with Holiday Autos and got Goldcar, never ever again! We now book direct if possible.

Agree with you Jangles, I have used Hertz to hire cars 9 times out of 12 and never had a problem, yes they are more expensive but you get what you pay for... that said the past couple of times I have used Best autos and again cannot fault the cars or service..
