Booked our next trip to Caleta direct with the hotel payment upon arrival less deposit should I pay in sterling or euros !!!

Euro, the hotel will most likely give a poor exchange rate.

Do they expect cash or credit card?

If cash, but Euros in the UK. That way YOU control the rate.

If credit card, it will probably be a charge in Euros which your credit card company will convert to sterling at the standard rate plus a foreign currency purchase fee, typically 2.5 to 3%. 

Some credit cards e.g Nationwide FlexPlus, do not slap the fee on top.

Are you expecting to have a choice? I certainly doubt that they'll take pound notes, and I would expect them to give you a bill in euros and expect exactly that amount. But I suppose some of the bigger and more Brit-friendly hotels might convert to sterling at their own chosen rates (good ones for them, obviously).

I'd be very surprised to see anyone taking pound notes as it's over 30 years since I've seen any... too long out of UK Sheila

You're right - over 21 years ago when we were sat on a plane with our cat and saw Southend Pier below us on the way to Holland. Spent a total of about 20 days there since. I do know I can't spend those lovely little brown ones (still remember my first but I hadn't realised the green ones had gone, too. How sad .

When paying by card they give you the option  of paying in Stirling or euros, will be paying in euros.

If paying by card I always opt for euros.
Very rarely was the sterling rate offered been worse than the card rate of my bank - even after adding in the non-sterling transaction charge.
The card rate has usually been better than the best UK rate for buying euros.

We always take the option of whatever currency it is when using the card,to be honest dont think we have been offered the option of sterling except on the airport duty free
