Teachers in the Canaries have given a warm welcome to the conviction of a mother for assaulting a primary school teacher who rebuked her son.

20.04.2015 - The ruling by a judge in Las Palmas ends a news-making prosecution which has been used by unions as a test case for the “public authority” status granted recently to teachers by the government as part of the drive to curb discipline problems in schools and violent behaviour by parents.

The prosecution was brought after the mother of the young boy attending a primary school in San Bartolomé de Tirajana confronted the teacher for reprimanding her child for playing with a video game during a work activity.  The court heard that the mother verbally abused the female teacher and then punched her in the face, knocking her to the ground.  Convicting the woman of assault, the judge handed her a one-year prison sentence and imposed a restraining order banning her from being within 50 metres of the teacher or making contact of any kind with her for two years.

The teachers` union ANPE, which helped the teacher bring the case to court, applauded the ruling and hoped it would end the vulnerability of tens of thousands of members of the profession.  It added that the latest Penal Code reform approved by the Spanish government provides for sentences of up to four years for assaults on teachers.
