Even on a holiday island you have to be aware and take all necessary steeps to ensure it doesn't happen to you. But even that isn't enough for some and their devious ways!

Saw the post on facebook and find it very bizarre that some people do not hire/use the safe in their apartment.

If you use a safe in a private villa or even in an apartment on a complex you are insane. It's the first place they look and in our experience they will dig it out and take it away. Just hide valuables in the best place you can. Believe me you have a better chance of keeping your stuff.

Never had a problem with using the safe in 31 years of foreign travel. I would rather put passports etc away than cart them around in a large handbag. As for hiding valuables away I am sure the burglars would look in the same places we would hide, human nature and all that x I am not sure travel insurance would pay out if you said you hid your passport under your dirty socks??

We always use the safe in our villa.
That's where we keep our small supply of semtex fitted with a detonator.
It would be too dangerous for honest people to just leave that laying around.

Youtube is full of clips showing how to open hotel safes.

Personally I look for more original places to hide stuff - or take it with me. Under the spare wheel in the rental car saved me a fortune many years ago, when the car was broken into an ransacked, but my cash wasn't found.

31 years of putting valuables in a holiday safe.....got to say you are one lucky bugger. Still horses for courses and if that's what makes you feel safe ,all well and good. I wouldn't put my personal stuff within a mile of a safe. But then I thought that way once until it happened. There's always a first time. Important thing is to make the first time the last.
