Corrralejo Development Tax

the La Oliva Ayuntamiento tells us that we're liable for the Corralejo Development Tax, as are all of the properties built south of Calle Anzuelo - the road up from Hoplaco to the back of Rita's. That's about two-thirds of the whole town and a vast number of properties.

The tax was imposed donkeys years ago to finance the huge expansion of the town with the upgrade of the streets, lights, drainage etc and was only confirmed as legal by the courts in 2013.

The only good news is that it's a notfication, and not a bill - yet.

Anybody know anything about this?  It seems that developers could/should have paid it at building stage but if they didn't...

They must be expecting a lot of enquiries.  There's an English language information line. I haven't called it yet. 828 699 978 open 0800 to 1300. The Spanish line is even open in the afternoon and eveing 828 691 212  open 0800 to 1900!

We had to pay this tax in the 90s at the rate of £400 every 6 months over 4 years. That was for a 2 bed apartment and the larger properties must have paid thousands.  When I sold my apartment in 2013 I was told that I had missed the final payment but I was let off due to the age of the debt.

Sh*t!    Our notification is numbered  1683 so seems like there are going to be a lot of VERY unhappy residents if we're talking about everyone having to pay â,¬thousands

Seriously, unless I've misunderstood what I've just read 8xx numbers are being introduced all over Spain to areas where they're running out of numbers under the existing system.

Surely there must have been something written in your Deeds/Registration docs. This cannot be such a surprise....and what about your lawyer when you made the purchase? Was nothing said? Or is this a wind up?
Reminds me of Spain in the 1980's. They 'tax' all the new home owners to pay for the infrastructure.

Haven't spoken to lawyers - yet.  Of course it seems that the tax has only existed since it was deemed legal in 2013.
We bought the house as a new-build in 2004 developed by Secotur, part of Atlantis group.  Senor Atlantis still owns several houses here.  Two neighbours we know have also received the lettter but both say as it's not actually a bill they'll just wait.
It seems, Archer101, that it is a tax to provide infrastructure. Ferty took 20+ years to follow the mainland.

On this basis we should all be getting a bill from the Romans for building the major British Roads, and infrastruture

The tax was paid by us early owners and spent on the infrastructure so what would be the purpose of collecting it again. Perhaps we will get some of ours paid back.

I think that during march you can see what the plans are in the offices at 'Tenencia de Alcaldia del Ayuntamiento' from 9am - 2pm.
