As part of the Day of the Tree, the Fuerteventura Cabildo are giving away up to 10 free plants/trees - http://www.cabildofuer.es/portal/p_14_final_Distribuidor_2.jsp?seccion=s_fnot_d4_v1.jsp&contenido=6509&tipo=8&nivel=1400&language=es

The plants are available from 17-21 November, between 10.30 and 13.00, at the Estacion Biologica in La Oliva on Calle Boyajo.  You need to take your DNI/NIE there, and fill out the paperwork.

I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth but the 20 I got last year are taking over my garden. I only lost one plant even though I left them sitting around waiting for a couple of months. The trees are doing worryingly well in my postage-stamp garden.

I certainly recommend others to take up the offer.

The ones that I've got in the past are all thriving too, Sheila.  I've got no more room for anymore.  As they are traditional Canarianplants they do survive and grow with only a little water and maintenance.

Im forever pruning the trees/ bushes i have ,i just cant get ground cover plants to take :(
do illiterate people really get the benefits of alphabet soup

I was given a cutting of real fast growing ground and wall cover, I don't know what it is, but it comes out with lovely purple flowers and dense green leaves, you see a lot of houses in Tamaragua with it covering the walls....excellent stuff anyway, I planted the cutting a few months ago and already it's crew he'd the top of my garden wall....it's common stuff I believe....also, implanted a jasmine which has spread like wildfire, I think they like the ' soil' !

TamaraEnLaPlaya

Brilliant news Captain - thank you for posting. I'll certainly be going along to collect some more plants.

Biggles

Captain Sensible

They are listed in the link, Biggles.  They are:   palmeras, dragos, peralillos, algarrobos, tabaibas, lentisco, higueras, especiero, tajinaste blanco y cardón canario.

This promises a very long line of Brits, all chanting their favourite mantra "cheap cheap".

Captain Sensible

Hopefully, all nationalities will be there, Erik.

It's the Cabildo trying to encourage reforestation on the island and help prevent soil erosion.

Does anyone know if any of the trees/ shrubs are scented? I have noticed, when out with my dogs in the early morning, that there is a large green shrub with pink flowers which appears to be a morning scented shrub, you see them lining the top road into Coralejo, past the water park, and they smell delightful,mi don't know what they are but I wouldn't mind a few for the garden !

IsThisForumStillGoingWow

Take a pic and post it here Jock and I'll bet you 100/1 that the Captain will identify it for you  :) :)
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and im not sure about the former .....

Jock719

Right Ok, I'll get a picture, it's a lovely smelling thing, like jasmine but heavier scented!.

Sounds like Oleander. However be careful as they are known as the most poisonous of the garden plants.

murman

Can anyone advise whether you need to be a resident?

We own a property in La Oliva and have NIE numbers and will be on the island when the plants are being given out.

Any help greatly appreciated.

beachlife

You don`t need to be a resident to get the plants. I am non resident and have had the plants in the past. However I personally would not get them, unless you have a very big piece of land , the plants do grow really fast given any type of water and tend to grow really tall/big. Plant with care.

It is exactly am Oleander! Thanks very much, I didn't realise it was poisonous, but it does have a delightful smell. I don't imagine there can be much danger unless one were to ingest it in some way, certainly there are lines of it going into Corralejo! I think I might get some for the back garden, just for the scent.

Ole Man River

Hi Jock, I have found that not all Oleander plants have the big perfume.
The best one seems to be the double pink one. Some don't have any. You need to sniff before you buy! 8)

Jock719

Yes,indeed, I ' googled' the plant last night and found that out! There are some I have smelled in the early morning which have an incredibly strong scent, reminiscent of night stock. They are pink in colour, I imagine they must be the double pinks.

TamaraEnLaPlaya

I've been googling the plant names to see what is on offer and I've put pics in a word doc that I'm happy to email to anyone who PMs me. Don't really want to spend the time putting all the pics on here! It is a slightly different selection to the previous offer with a few the same.

Collected ours before closing today. 10 minute wait as only a few Spaniards ahead of us.

Plants of better quality this year.

Aph1 - sorry I haven't replied sooner. I got sunstroke from standing in the queue for 2 1/2 hours on Monday! Been feeling quite poorly and haven't been online. If you'd still like pics please PM me your private email address as I can't add an attachment to emails sent through the forum.

The plants were worth the wait though and some friends came with me who only wanted a couple each so their 'spare' ones I'll be using for roundabouts and roadside areas that I'm trying to clear up. If you see someone picking up rubbish or putting in plants near Corralejo Mercadona, give me a toot and a wave!

scorpio1966
