Does anyone have this system installed and what is your experience.

We own a property outside La Oliva (Rural) which has no telephone line and we advised will cost a fortune to get one to the property.

We are therefore looking for a cost effective wireless internet service but not everyone covers La Oliva where we live.

Any advice??

We have an Orange dongle but download speed extremely slow and doesn't always work therefore a more permanent solution would be best.

Looking at the coverage maps I guess you need to find a high site with LOS to the village (football lights?) and you're using 3.4G

I have been using WIMAX for the last 4 months since a landline is not available at my location. The experience has been frustrating to say the least. On occasions, the speed is super fast and at other times, simply number two. I have had issues with reliability too. However, it a better option than using a dongle without any doubt because of costs. I am a heavy bandwidth user therefore I have more of an issue  since upload speeds are slow. For day to day use you will be alright.

Hi NoG, I'm not sure which company you are using. I imagine it is not Iberbanda as the first transmitter only became live in July and they have relatively few clients at present so speeds will not drop a lot.

WIMAX is a technology standard like ADSL or WIFI.

In Fuerteventura some of the companies connect the WIMAX end user to a single ADSL/VDSL line so effectively you have a number of people sharing one ADSL/VDSL connection. If there is one person connected to the system you could get up to the speed of that line so you could be sold the service as 10Mb and at 4AM if you are the only person connected you could approach that speed - but normally if you are sharing the connection with 10, 20, 30... people your speed will drop.

Another problem that can be encountered is interference. All of the providers except for Iberbanda are using unlicensed bandwidth. When there are a lot of companies and users sharing the same bandwidth this becomes congested and the speed and quality suffer.

Iberbanda offers a symmetrical service with the same upload and download - this requires better quality and more expensive equipment to be installed in the client's property than most providers offer.

In Fuerteventura and the Canaries in general Telefónica owns 70+% of the internet bandwidth. For competing companies this means that buying bandwidth is expensive. Iberbanda, being part of Telefonica does not have this problem and also has the advantage of being able to use Movistar mobile service transmission towers.

On the mainland we have a large number of Iberbanda clients using the service to watch UK TV. Fortec has a pay as you go service that uses the Mag 250 box and provides all of the free to air UK channels directly from the UK. We have tested this with Iberbanda engineers and for standard definition it uses around 1.3Mb of bandwidth. We also have an option with a lower quality which uses 0.7Mb. It shows the pixels sometimes but is watchable. We also have HD but this needs 3.2Mb and does not work on an Iberbanda connection. I can send demo videos of standard and low definition TV over an Iberbanda service to anyone that would like to see them.

The next transmitter due to be opened before the end of the year is in Lajares but will not cover El Cotillo. After this if there is a business case to open new transmitters Iberbanda can do this pretty much anywhere on the island but to justify a new transmitter they need to be able to project having up to 150 users. If anyone can bring together a number of definite buyers I can ask Iberbanda to look at installing in a certain area.

Iberbanda WIMAX installation is currently free with no contract period so if anyone wants to try it they do not have much to lose.

Companies using unlicensed bandwidth are not illlegal, although they should be registered with the CMT, the Spanish equivalent of Ofcom. It's just that parts of the bandwidth spectrum are licensed and their use is restricted to those with licenses. For instance Telefonica has been waiting for permission to use the bandwidth that was used by analog TV for their 4g service now that digital TV has been introduced.
