Celebration of the 1740 English Pirate Invasion of Fuerteventura is Flawed.

In the latest edition of HOY Magazine, much is made of the Hand-Over of two new boats in preperation of the celebration of the "so-called" Invasion by English Pirates in 1740.
With all the money spent on the occasion, the boats, uniforms etc. One would expect that in their "Wisdom", they would get the Flag correct.

Note the British Flag, the Saint Patrick's Saltire, or Irish Diagonal Red Cross, was not incorporated until 1800.

Also, if they were Pirates, I doubt if they would have been wearing the Uniforms of the British Royal Marines of that period.

There's absolutely no way in the world that they would have had the machinery to produce those beautiful laminated posters in the background either

Department of Culture my Aunt Mable . Whoever's getting paid a high salary out of Tourist Revenue and Resident's Taxes, to organise this, hasn't got a clue.

Why would they invade Tamasite in the first place. There's nothing there but a few scraggy old Goats

Children in Spanish schools are taught that The Golden Hind was in fact a pirate ship and Francis Drake was a pirate. My grandson reliably informed me of that fact so there can be no dispute there

He wasn't a pirate in the sense of Blackbeard or Kidd. They robbed, killed and pillaged to their own benefit.

Drake was what was referred to in England as a "Privateer". This meant that he did much the same thing as the pirates (perhaps a little less viciously) and the loot he obtained from his activities went to the English Crown. That's why he was made a Sir.

I know Woe, but it really all depends on who wrote the history books you're reading. I don't know if the Captain can confirm that that is what is taught in all Spanish primary schools but it certainly is taught to the kids in El Mat school..Francis Drake was a pirate

Seems like he spent most of his time annoying the Spanish, hence their un-favourable opinion of him.
