Is there any specific need or any car is ok?

Thanks.

Unless you plan to do some off roading down at Cofte, for which you will need a 4x4 type car, otherwise a regular road car is fine, the island is civilised with proper roads etc. even a small motorway

Be careful if you do plan on off roading because most car hire companies do not permit it.

DO READ all the threads on here about the car hire companies, some are very good more are a bunch of cowboys. All the information and guidance you need is on his section of the forum.

And best of all, have a great holiday, and do take time room back and tell us how you enjoyed it and post a few photos.  8) 8) 8)

Bit of a strange question, surely it depends on how many you need to accommodate, amount of luggage and how much you want to spend?

We have hired all shapes and sizes from VW foxes, fiat Pandas etc right up to people carriers and Jeep Wranglers. Had great holidays in all of them but did get a bit wet about 15 years ago when the Ford Fiesta we rented developed a serious leak in the roof during a heavy downpour in Jandia.

To answer your question, reliability, fair price and a decent hire firm are more important to me these days than size of car, although an upgrade is always welcome ;D

Remember that it's only a couple of hours max from top to bottom, so you're unlikely to be spending all day driving.
There are precious few kilometres where you can (legally) do anything more than 90kph.
Unless you're addicted to music in the car, you'll be more interested in looking out of the window than listening to a radio/CD.
You might want aircon if you don't want to open the windows and get your hair tangled.
If any of the passengers are a little on the large side, you may want to go for a bigger car, as spending an hour with someone else's sweat on your arm is not so good.  ::)
You're not that likely to be in a downpour (keeping fingers crossed).
Petrol is much cheaper here than elsewhere, so consumption isn't usually a burning issue.
Do the better cars have GPS? If so, that could be interesting if you're going to explore.
If you're likely to be transporting a surfboard, it's illegal to drive with them in the car, even if it's technically manageable. You'll need a roof-rack.
The police are really hot on drink-driving, so forget the built-in mini-bar.

How about the cheapest one that ticks all your boxes? And then hope for an upgrade. I've rarely been given the car I booked anyway. :( or :), depending on what I got.

The bottom line is if you intend to do a bit of sight seeing then don't go for the basic cars on offer even with aircon. You will find that they struggle on the mountain roads and it can be a bit of a trill wondering if they will pull you around the next blind bend. Probably a golf or astra size is ok for two adults and two children. If you can get a diesel all the better.

Got to disagree, Last Christmas we had a VW fox and in May we had a Fiat Panda, both small engines and with 2 adults and 2 kids we never struggled up in them there mountains. Might have to drop a gear on the tight bends but never any fear of not making it.

Anything with five doors and aircon.

Last year we ended up with a Polo, when we had friends with us. It took the four of us everywhere, up mountain roads etc, no problems at all, and none of us are lightweight (13-16 stone).

The boot is definitely 2 suitcases and 2 small bags. No more. Fortunately we flew in and home on different days, so we managed.
Boot size is probably more important than seating. (or only take a sensible amount of luggage)

I have had both VWs you mentioned never the Fiat, all I'm saying is its slightly harder work on the mountains compared with the next model up. I think the Polo may have the same engine as the basic golf. (unless you rent from orlando where the engine is an extra)

We've had a few of the Hyundai i10's that Pluscar supply, and have been great.  Run forever on a tank of juice, aircon, AUX socket for your mp3 player, 5 doors, big enough for me and the Mrs and enough gear to last 14 days.

So much so, that we are now considering one when she changes her car

Magoo

We always go for a bog standard car with air con & have never had any problems apart from once having to drive 40 odd clicks without a clutch pedal (Orlando!)

As for mountain roads, you just have to work the gearbox a bit harder, but there should be no issues

Just a tip for readers of this thread...........
If you need more power from your hire car (and more MPG)  turn the aircon off.
Aircon uses 15-20% of the engines power. :o
