Some friends of ours hired a car from Hertz at FUE airport and were not aware of the fact that rental cars should display a current ITV Certificate ( equivalent to MOT in the UK) if the car is more than 3 years old.

They were stopped by the Guardia Civil when on a trip to Jandia. They were issued with a 200€ fine ( which they did not pay) for not having a valid ITV (it ran out in August 2012) and for not displaying the ITV sticker on the windscreen. The Guardia were very pleasant with them and said it was not their fault but that of Hertz who would have to pay the fine.

So travellers, check your windscreen before you drive off into the sunset!

Taxis, buses and hire vehicles require an bi=annual ITV from day one

"The equivalent of an MOT in Spain, the test has to be taken every two years for cars between four and 10 years old, and once a year for cars over 10 years old.
Cars of less than four years old only need a bi-annual test if the vehicle has been used as a hire car or a courtesy car."
