FAAM: Facility For Airborne Atmospheric Measurement

I´ve seen this Plane at Fuerte Airport a few times over the last 2 weeks. Anybody know why they are researching the Air over Fuerteventura.

Do you know,I never thought the air was as clean here as most people make out.On a truly clear day you can almost see the reg plates of the cars parked in Corralejo.....from Playa Blanca.

But these days are quite rare.

You´re right Kevin. We used to be able to see Lanzarote a lot. But thinking about it, not seen it very clear for a while. Hmmmmmmmmm ......

Atmospheric Research Aircraft returns after Deployment

The ARA returned, to our base in Cranfield yesterday, after a successful and trouble free detachment in Fuerteventura after completing their objectives.

The study, named FENNEC, after a small nocturnal Fox that lives in the Sahara desert, aimed to characterise the thermodynamic, dynamic and compositional structure of the troposphere over the Sahara desert.

The Avalon Aero support team of four technicians once again successfully provided full support for the aircraft in difficult conditions, and within the strict operating time schedules, reconfiguring the aircraft so that the vital experiments were completed, whilst maintaining this elderly but sophisticated aircraft.

The next deployment, BORTAS, in July, is designed to measure the effect of forest fires in North America have on the air quality in Europe.

The sophisticated nature of this scientific aircraft and the support required for it, has resulted in the team at Cranfield being leaders in this field.

Looks like the Campaign is due to continue into 2013 and Fuerteventura is getting a lot more attention than anywhere else if you look at the hours allocated.
