Qliquey Corralejo!

Been going to Corralejo for many years now and is it just us who think the majority of the expat community there view and treat theyre fellow countryman "tourists" with some disdain,we noticed this seemingly prevalent attitude with every trip we make and down in Caleta we were told about the qliques up in Corralejo. seems to us that living over there has probably gone to there heads somewhat,frankly its quite immature and sad and takes something away from such a beautiful,chilled out place.but hey nothing as oddly unusual (in my mind) as folk!!

If they treat some of the visitors with distain, its probably because they have good reason to. We`ve been many times and are going twice next year, Staying with ex pats in fact. Nope can`t say I`ve ever been on the receiving end of your experiences though.

Been going to Corralejo for the past 12 years and never experienced anything like it.....quite the opposite in fact.

Hi Fuerteguy2, you will find cliques in all ex pat communities, its human nature. My advice for anybody thinking of becoming an ex pat is not get involved with cliques, stay well clear,just my personal opinion.

I'd go further than Tamkid: wherever you get people you get cliques. It seems to be human nature for some people. Happens from kindergarten up through every social structure. Do you belong to any clubs back home? (Or won't they let you in

?) You just have to do your own thing and ignore them. No more here than elsewhere.

Expats have moved away from their families and friends to live in another place, surrounded by foreign tongues and turn to others in their own situation. Of course this is a clique and it's certainly not exclusive to corralejo, it's everywhere that people feel isolated . Pal up with other visitors. No, that's another clique isn't it

People moving to any new community seek to relate to any peer group they find as possible safety nets/peer groups they think they may relate to. Fuerteventura is as hag-ridden by Class/economic distinctions as anywhere else. You will need to find a group that you most relate to for support and entertainment since it is implicit in your post that this is what you seek.
On this forum those with most only show up on issues concerning money, those who still seek to make a brown-nosed mark join the golf set and those who just want to get inebriated and listen to muzac once or twice a week and 'want to live the dream' just head for the nearest pavement bar.
If I were you I'd head for those who actually do something and are interested in something to get most out of Fuerte apart of marginally more sunshine and cheaper booze.

Tend to disagree with that wag. In my 13 years of experience i have found Fuerte is one of the few places where class and money mean not a zilch... especially among the ex pats. In fact i've not met anyone who has ever given it the big i am. If anyone has money they also keep it very quiet and go to the same bars and restaurants as the 'paupers'.. Not sure if thats for reasons of self humility or something more mysterious though.

Certainly agree with Waggy that it's mainly those who came here to retire that form cliques. Some of them don't feel that the island is really "home"; they're just on an extended holiday here and after a while many get bored. Sunbathing, drinking, gossiping isn't much to fill a life.

Those who work, have worked, or have some time-consuming interest here rarely join the cliques and have much better things to do and talk about. So we all have the choice.

Not much of a choice in Corralejo and a very narrow spread between BahiaRoyal and Avenida.

Exactly why Fuerte is such a leveller. Well minted or not we all have to go to the same places. Theres nowhere you'd feel uncomfortable even if you only had a few quid to spend. I've been to so called 5* across the island and it would rank 4* at best elsewhere and with a clientelle to match. You're better off in Avenida with the great unwashed..
