Debate Over Holiday Prices In School Breaks

This will be debated in Parliament today, after 166,000 signatures were collected online.

Is it "rip-off", or is it "supply and demand"?  I'm not sure you can legislate to tell companies what prices they can charge for their products.  How about air fares?  Convenient daytime flights cost more than awful night-time flights, should this be banned too?

The price of a Large Beer in Caleta is the same all the year round  ( except Happy Hour of course )

Unfortunately this is just a basic Macro economical fact, and the laws of supply and demand apply, I know I had 4 children and it hurt, it hurts my children now with their children, but the Government cannot in a western style Capitalist economy act in a defacto manner to change market forces.

The law of supply and demand defines the effect that the availability of a particular product and the desire (or demand) for that product has on price. Generally, if there is a low supply and a high demand, the price will be high. In contrast, the greater the supply and the lower the demand, the lower the price will be."
This is of course not a law but a realisation and happens all over the economy in many differing ways.

The price of a Large Beer in Caleta is the same all the year round  ( except Happy Hour of course )

Let us say that the consumption of beer in Caleta increased for two months in the year, to a point were the brewery could not meet demand. Beer supplies would go to the bars who paid most & that would be reflected in the price of a pint.

From personal experience, the going rate for a house rental is well below cost (including mortgage etc) for most of the year.

For a few weeks in the summer holidays the revenue almost matches the outgoings. Scandalous!

I think that the problem here is that the majority of schools in the UK schedule their breaks all at the same time which creates the over demand. Surely each local authority in the country could liaise to spread the demand over the year.
