cofete beach

Hi people
Can anyone tell me if there is anyway of getting to cofete beach other than hiring a car ?
We are coming back in early january staying in correljeco but would love to visit this beach

If you don`t want to drive yourself there are jeep safaris that you can go on. Also there is a trail that you can walk. Can`t say I fancy that though.

When I was staying in Costa Calma last February I went to Cofete on a 4x4 land rover trip run by Discovery. Costa Calma was the furthest north the trip runs from, but there's useful info in this thread;

Lovely views from the top of the mountain pass, brilliant long empty beach, but please don't even attempt to swim in the sea as its very rough and dangerous looking. The waves are big (at least they have been the few times  we have been there) and even though Im a strong swimmer, would dare risk it.

Enjoy it all the same but on the beach

Very strong current as well by all accounts. I suppose the lack of surfers is a pointer, the surf seems good enough for them to  make the trip but they don`t seem to.

Looks like I will have to bite the bullet and hire a car don't want to be constrained to time tables

Don't worry about going in for a swim the wife won't go in if there's a slight wave corro lol

The beach appeals to me because there's no development there so natural and wild

It has been mentioned many times in the past - most hire cars are not insured if you drive off road and the road over to Cofete is classed as "off-road" - and you are likely to meet other cars on very dangerous bends!
Certainly in Caleta, you can hire a 4x4 which is insured for driving over to Cofete (Ecocar opposite the chemist for one).

Jandia peninsula is closed at the moment as Sir Ridley, in his wisdom, has chosen Cofete to make his film of Exodus - if you've been there you will know why, not just the scenery but the place is spiritual

It re-opens in about one week - in Fuerteventura time that could mean a month, so check before you hire a 4x4

PS Don't enter the water anywhere on the West Coast - swell, currents, rip tides make it very dangerous. If you want to go surfing go with an experienced registered and insured company

I suggest you stay away from the waters edge - one unexpected big wave can wash you off your feet. Watch children too - DO NOT let them paddle

Will be in fuerteventura early january so hopefully beach will be open then,

Will be just me and the wife so don't worry about kids padding just want to visit the beach take a fews pics and top up our allover tan while lol

Personally I wouldn't mind camping the night on the beach but I know it's not allowed in fuerteventura and don't think the wife would be up for that anyway

As Duncolm said Discovery do a 4x4 tour over there, they do have an office in Corrie its on the left just before the last roundabout heading up to the waterpark but I never saw anyone in it when I was over last May, I arranged a trip and was picked up in Calleta about 8am 2 of there guys travel down from there in the morn, was an interesting experience getting a lift from the locals, no regard for speed limits and overtaking was interesting to say the least lol

Once saw a German woman engulfed by a wave at Cofete. For some reason she was sat with her back to the sea but to be fair, a "safe" distance from the water.  One huge wave ploughed it's way up the beach & got her. If she had been any closer, she would have been dragged out to sea for fish food.  So as Spike has advised, keep kids away & if you are anywhere near the water, keep your eyes open.

I still worry that letting Ridley onto Cofete will be a huge nail in it's coffin. If the movie is a hit, the place will be invaded. The only thing protecting it will be the road, as you can't get a tour bus over there (Yet)

As I said in a previous text only me and the other half no kids going so worry there if we get there that is, hope it stays as it is after the filming the thought of maybe just the two of us or just a few people on a big beach which is wild and untouched by development is what appeals

Could get quite scary over there, Ridley Scot and Sigourney Weaver? Exodus aka Alien gets religion. " From the depths of Villa Winter cellar..." How did they get all the stuff needed to film an epic to Cofete? Huge helicopters or would it be feasible to sail it round? Or by submarine directly into the hidden submarine pen.

The local authorities spent weeks grading and rolling the road and when that is complete the road is almost like a metaled road until it rains, then goodbye a good road surface

The road "over the top" is in perfect nick and most vehicles can get to Cofete on it, including lorries, big trailers, etc

Ah, I see. I used to wonder how the guys that built Villa Winter got the building materials in, but having seen buildings in far less accessible places I guess where there`s a will...

I've read that prisoners from the post Civil War POW camp at Tefia were used to build the Cofete road.

I'm sure they did - remember Franco and Hitler were very close allies. The terrible results were events like the bombing of  Guernica in northern Spain during the civil war
