recently back from fuertre we hired bikes for three days great way of getting about, we checked out a few shops which we found quite dear then we came across volcano bike shop gave us a good price the bikes were ideal for what we needed ,so if you gonna hire one check them out and compare gave us a little off as we hired for three days

Be careful of the rusty rent a wrecks  found chained up outside some hotels/apartments, the Volcano bikes are all roadworthy.

Plus 1 for Vulcano biking.  (Don't know why he spells it like that!)  We have our own bikes now but always hired from him before.  He has been there for donkey's years.

Thanks Capricornukuk and everyone else,
We will check them out. We fancy a trip to Cofete and having read the pros and cons of hire cars and insurance etc thought we could drive to Morro Jable with the bikes in the back, park up and ride from there

Very brave of you thinking of cycling from Morro Jable to Coffete - hope you have considered:-
1) the condition of the road surface (hope your posterior is very well padded!)
2) the distance you will have to cycle - from leaving FV2 at Morro Jable it's 11.4km of undulating rough track, then 2km of steep rough climb taking you 233m above sea level, then another 7km down to Cofete beach which is, of course, at sea level. should you also wish to visit Villa Winter add a further 1.5km each way and another climb of 130m with the corresponding drop on the return. Returning to M.J. you do, of course, have to climb back to 233m above sea level and drop down again. So, all in all the round trip, including Villa Winter, is about 43km of rough track.
More expensive, I know, but we went to Cofete last week using a hired Jeep that WAS insured for driving the track to Cofete - cost 75€ + fuel for the day with unlimited mileage.
Another alternative is to hire a buggy from Morro Jable and let the engine do the work.
Good luck whatever you decide to do, it's a fabulous place and well worth a visit.

Thanks for the advice Lionfish, weve done some research and the attraction to us both is leaving the car behind as much as possible. We are both experienced off road cyclists and coming from the South Wales Valleys we are used to going uphill.
Not being able to bring our own bikes the risk is always availability of decent kit so the positive comments about Vulcano help no end.
The more we think about it the more excited we get (and its still 4 weeks to go)....cant wait

  Hi Alijo,

Val & myself have made the journey from Morro to Cofete a couple of times which is a lovely ride with a nice Cafe stop for lunch at Cofete. The main problem is not so much the road surface (easy on a MTB) or the hills, but the strong dusty winds hitting you in the face. Choose a calm day if you can.
We have also ridden to the lighthouse at the end of the peninsula which is also a fab ride. Incidentally last year this was the course used by the the Spanish MTB federation for their annual MTB race in Fuerte (50k).
For both rides you can actually drive a normal (not 4x4) car about 10-15k from Morro along the track towards Cofete stopping at the car park for the walk over the mountain to Cofete (about 5k but do not try it on your bike) which is OK up to that point. This then makes the ride more manageable.
Val and myself have just had our 60th birthdays so it cannot be that daunting.

What date do they hold mtb event and is it open to anyone who wants to enter?

Hi Capricornukuk.

From what I remember last year, the event was on a Sunday around about the middle of Feb. I have no more info than this , but perhaps if you surf MTB Spain/Canaries websites you may pick up on something and get lucky. There were about 100 competitors and I did not notice any non Spanish nationals. The ability level of the competitors seemed quite high and the course was non technical. Sorry I cannot be any more help.

Most of the hire shops will fit SPDs if you ask them. The shop I use in Costa calma is http://www.volcano-bike.com/en/bike-rental and they fit as normal a dual sided pedal for both SPD and non cleat shoes.

Seems odd that two of the hire shops on the island have a very similar name! I have also noticed it is cheaper to hire in the North of the island. I think Ralph at Volcano in Costa Calma down South seems to have a monopoly.
