Drone surveillance for island coasts

Illegal immigrants and drug traffickers will have a new enemy to contend with in the Canaries soon following the news that unmanned aircraft (UAV) are to be deployed here to provide surveillance of coastal waters.

The Civil Guard announced in Madrid yesterday that it will be given improved technical resources by the Interior Ministry to be able to patrol the waters more effectively to detect migrant boats and drug-carrying vessels. Among the resources are expected to be several UAVs (more commonly known as drones) of the type used by the United States in conflict zones such as Afghanistan and Iraq. Civil Guard head Arsenio Fernández said "organised crime, particularly drug and people traffickers, use sophisticated means to carry out their business and law enforcement agencies needed to do likewise to prevent them from operating".

f*** the immigrants and drug traffickers, what about the bent Guardia?

Can it watch them too?

It's the bent Guardia who ordered them. Don't want to make the same mistake twice.

I'm glad to hear it, the most cost effective method.

Couldn't agree more. They can send up the drone, make sure the coast is clear and get the stuff off the boats before their less corrupt (or yet to be corrupted) colleagues spot the gear coming in. This way they can get a good return on their investment and possibly steal a few shipments from the other entrepreneurs who try to smuggle the dope in without paying for the Guardia's assistance.

Failing that they can just blow up the occasional school or wedding party and claim there was insurgents hiding in the bushes... or perhaps I'm just a bit cynical.
