Paddster - thanks. I was mostly concerned that my child will get really upset over it, but he seems to be ok, soo... never mind, it was old cheap bike with zero (or negative) remaining value, which he was at the point of overgrowing anyway.

dagwood - I don't think it's worth the bother of claiming. We reported the incident so that the police maybe can pass that place more often (it's where lots of school kids park their bikes), or if somebody finds it by the roadside and brings it somewhere.

Life-long enemas to them, the chaps whose parents weren't married when they were born! 

In a way it's worse that it was an old bike: at least if someone comes round with a brand-new racing bike then leaves it unwatched, you could say they'd asked for it. Hopefully, it was just kids who took it for a "laugh" and dumped it somewhere for the police to find.

Paddster - well, it's not a flat walk, certainly, and with the poor mobile reception and all, you need to exercise more caution than on most walks here. Checking the tide table is advisable; NOT walking alone - essential, I'd say. But the views compensate, at least for me
