Well whatever White Wash and Young discovered is not new. When I was growing up in rural Ireland many moons ago, any house that had a wind up phone belonged to a VIP. IE. Doctor, Vet ,Clergy or Bookie. In the mid 70s when we bought our first house for 11,000 pounds having a phone installed added a 1,000 pounds to its value.
