Benefit cheats
Black economy clampdown

The crackdown in the Canaries on people working and drawing unemployment benefit continues with the news that 400 benefit cheats are currently being "dealt with" by the Department of Employment.
A combination of cross-checking of personal details in the systems of various government bodies and spot checks in companies helped inspectors detect the cases and the culprits now have to return all the benefit money paid and fork out a hefty fine for cheating. Companies that recruited them are also likely to be hit by penalties of between €3,000 and €10,000. The details were given by regional Department of Employment chief Francisco Guindín in a radio interview in Tenerife. Guindín said that the high unemployment rate in the Canaries is fertile ground for "hidden economy" work. The recent campaign to detect sources of undeclared work has led to around 4,000 jobs being brought into the open, with employees forced to pay tax and national insurance, he added.

Island connections article. :)

This was rife several years back, everyone and his dog were doing it, why does it take them so long to work these things out?

Whatever next - the UK government doing the same!

I don't think realistically that it's as easy for them to do it in the UK now compared to how it used to be.
The way the Spanish have their system setup leaves it wide open to exploitation.

The British government should be checking on benefit cheats living here in Fuerte and claiming back in UK, I know at least 2 but unfortunately don't enough information to report them, 1 needs to walk with a stick while in UK but amazing doesn't need when getting of the plane here.

I am glad they are cracking down on benefit cheats.  They cost the country millions, and don't pay taxes etc.

They should do it here more decisively instead of kicking hell out of poor people who have 1 bedroom too many.

Just my tuppence worth
