Is there an official procedure for selling a car.

Captain Sensible

If you sell a car you have to go through the Trafico Office in Puerto del Rosario, and complete the necessary paperwork with the purchaser, who also has to pay tax at the office on Primero de Mayo.  It's an all morning job.  You have to make an appointment with Trafico which can be done online.

If you don't feel up to doing it yourself, for whatever reason, you can use MAPFRE to do it for you. Their office in Corralejo has a desk dedicated for this, I don't know about other towns. You have to pay but if you split the costs, vendor and purchaser, it's not so bad! I used them earlier this year when a vehicle sale needed to go through when I had a lot else on my plate.

Thanks for the replies, extremely interesting, and useful.

Went with a friend today (Spanish) who was buying a car, and the Spanish bloke she was buying it from, and it was just as bad for them!

They had made an appointment with Trafico, electronically in advance. Turned up early, called to desk early - so far so good. Had they got 101 documents and copies? - not all of them, ooops, had they been to Hacienda - no, oops, given Modelo 620 and sent away.

Off to Hacienda, take number, wait and wait... Had they got another 101 documents and copies? - not all of them, off to café with copier, back and take new number, wait........ Given completed Modelo 620 and sent to bank to pay. Off up town, queue in bank, paid, back to Hacienda, take new number, wait and wait......., sticky bar codes printed and attached to all 4 copies of Mod620, given 1 copy and sent back to Trafico.

Back at Trafico (opposite side of town, all of this incurs long walks or driving round and round hunting for parking spaces), seen straight away, have they now got all docs? Yes, been to café and copied. Fill in another form, double check 101 docs and copies, lose 50 docs, panic/reshuffle, found 49 docs. Pop round to another business with a photocopier. Hold on, different address on Empadron to that entered on form! Ah, recently moved, not changed Empadron yet. Hmmm, not sure I can do this for you today, get a new Empadron and come back, or, I can send the new docs to the old address and you can come back next week to change address and get another new set sent out.

For the privilege of all this they had to pay around 55â,¬ to Trafico and a lot more to Hacienda.

I had thought it was just those of us with limited Spanish that suffered like this - not so!

Moral of the story: be prepared by taking every conceivable doc and multi copies and make sure addresses up to date. Book an early appointment with Trafico so you have time for all the to and froing and can get back to them before they shut. Have a debit or credit card available to pay Trafico in the office or you will have another bank trip to pay their bill!

Moral of the story for the faint hearted (or people who work and can't spare a whole day): use Mapfre or similar service!

Must be time for a viewing of the 'Spanish Red Tape' video for the forum newbies - anyone got a link?

The above sounds familiar, having bought and sold several cars privately here. Make sure you have copies of everything and that your address is the same and up to date on everything. It's also good to check that the vehicle being bought has been properly imported, if it's come from the mainland, otherwise there's problems.

Looking forward to the day I tick the "One way only" box when booking flights to Fuerte. [:)]
