Title: Tightened security leaving Fuerte
Post by: Gone Fishing on September 28, 2015, 17:51:52 PM
Noticed a significant increase in the numbers of security staff wearing military-style uniforms on the departures X-ray and scanning equipment last week.

Also - all cameras, electrical items (ipods, mobile phones and headphones) had to be removed from hand luggage and placed in a tray to be scanned separately.

I was even swabbed for drugs - hands, shoes and carry-on bag - which is a first for me anywhere in the World.

Thankfully the results were negative but it does make the old sphincter a bit twitchy while the analyser makes up its mind if your clean or not.

We noticed that the other week, they took my Zippo light off me and my brother in law had the swab treatment when they went back a few days earlier.

Must be for all the drug pushers in Caleta.   ;D  :P

I fell victim to the random explosive swap test in Glasgow on the way over.   Both hands and feet.   The security guy was lucky i had washed my feet.

We have always had to take out our electrical equipment when leaving Fuerto...
When we last over in July I forget to take out my I Pad from my hand luggage at Manchester airport, of course this caused mayhem to the customs people, had to have a full search and swab tested... LESSON LEARNT  :(

My Co-Codemol failed the drugs test, as it contains Codeine whis is an Opium Based drug. I had to show my prescription before they let me have them back.

Thanks Woe, that's very useful to Know Woe, as I normally don't carry my prescription for my diabetic drugs, just a letter from my endocrinologist.

But when security start rubbing me the wrong way, I'll be needing my oxazepam...

My Co-Codemol was in my suitcase, in a plastic bag.
The dog picked it out as it was going around the carousel, unbelievable, such a small amout of the drug.

H0, Stop, Wait.
What are we talking about? Incoming or outgoing ?

Incoming:
All bagage including holdbagage) can be checked for contraband by customs.
They don't care if you have a pocketknife or a litre of water but will become unfriendly if they find 10 fake RayBans.
When they swab you they are checking for drugs

Outgoing:
Everything that will enter the plane can be checked for safety reasons by security.
They won't even see a bag of cocaine but will almost panic when they find a knitting needle
When they swab you they are checking for explosives.

Came home on Wednesday and didn't notice any difference. Took my laptop out of the bag but left a pad and kindle, no problem. My wife carries enough drugs to supply a hospital, including Codeine, and carries them all in a separate bag. She has never been stopped anywhere in the world including Dubai where we are told you can be imprisoned for taking Codeine in.
Perhaps we look like angels.:-)

We were on a late flight on Sat night.   Our friends offered we could shower etc at their place before heading for the airport, an offer we accepted.
My friend had the usual shampoo etc in her hand luggage for showering and changing.   When we were all spruced up we set off for the airport.
The security seemed to take an age, bear that in mind if you are running late.
When we got home and unpacked well guess what?   In her hand baggage was large shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste.   So much for the heighten security.

All this depends on which side of the bed they got out of that morning.

The same goes for Police at roundabouts, some days Red Cars, other days Blue Cars etc ...

I found the security scan and clearance yesterday afternoon the best and fastest ever. Must have been all the efficient Germans ahead of me in the queue. All departure flights at that time were all German dstinations

My poor hubby got pulled out of the queue on the way home this afternoon and had his bag, hands and legs swabbed ! At nearly 60yrs old he obviously looks like a drug mule !

Must admit it made my day, seeing his poor confused face, it was all I could do not to laugh, He on the other hand was horrified. I thank god that he didn't have my cocktails of drugs (prescripton) on him, that might have taken some explaining especailly as some where codine !

But pleased to see they are taking security so seriously, it actually made us feel safer knowing how good they are being.

We got through ok. Sue set off the metal detector with her silver bracelets, after they told her to leave them on They just sent her back through, holding her hand high!

When I got there, they all seemed to be looking  the other way, fortunately. No problem at all.

I think there must be an 'ignore' button on the machine. They just don't want to deal with me  :) :)

Infiniti was excellent at usual. Why else would we be there?

One week El Caleton, one week Infiniti. Suits us perfectly. Good company at both places, too.

I went through around 6pm on 14th of this month with no problem except the length of the queue and therefore the time it took - over half an hour of slowly shuffling along. When I checked in I saw the security queue and went for a coffee expecting it to have cleared a bit when I returned 30 mins later but the queue was even longer and I then had no choice but to get in line or I risked missing my flight. I'm all for thorough security checks but they need to eliminate the bottlenecks in the process.
Ahead of me someone had a new bottle of Jack Daniels confiscated - the security guy had a big grin on his face as he removed it from a rucksack!  :D

Firstly when leaving Fuerteventura in relations to drugs I can't understand the tightened security as I would have thought they want the drugs off the island, but in relation to explosives after the news today I can.

We left yesterday late afternoon /early evening and did not notice anything different, got through check in /bag drop and security within 15 minutes, at security all the usual things as we experience at UK airports apart from Elaine being offered plastic foot bags to keep her socks clean as she had taken her shoes off, something not all people had done!!!

Do people not understand the 100ml LIQUID rule in hand luggage one girl passed a 750ml water bottle through that was confiscated and didn't understand why ;D

Some people don't even know that Sharm El Sheik is in Egypt, a Muslim country.

I wouldn't even think about it with ISIS up the road in the Sinai Desert. " Oh, the Sinai Desert, where's that" ??

All they see is cheap all inclusive.  going anywhere in the middle east or north africa unless you have to is insanity. After the latest outrage expect even more numbers of winter visitors to the canaries. Until they get tougher with these muslim nutters the world will get ever more dangerous with fewer and fewer safe areas for a holiday.

I'd say Skegness may well end up the only safe option, only for the fact they are queueing up to commit an atrocity in the UK as well. And we continue to let in thousands more with no security checks every week. Hold on to yer hats its going to be a rough ride over the next 10 years.

I do know where Sharm El Sheik is and that Egypt is in the middle east with its issues, but these people may and will try to make a statement any where they can so airport security world wide, including our favourite Island Fuerteventura, needs to be of the highest level so it to protects us all.

Fair play to you.  No where is 100% safe, you can be beheaded, blown up, poisoned in London, New York, Paris.  You pays your money & takes your choice.  If we all stay at home (statistically, the most dangerous place on the planet) they win.

At the end of the day we all go where we choose to, . If you do choose to take that chance though, nobody especially in places designated as high risk by the UK foriegn office should expect to be bailed out by the government getting you home and providing any aid if things go wrong.

Agreed theres the argument if we don't go there the terrorists have won. Bold words but no solution. Personally i'd sooner them think they won than see my family end up like those poor souls in that russian jet. If they had their time over again theres no doubt they would have stayed away. But you only get one chance, and if your unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time as so many who thought they would be safe have done. Its end of story.

Better off in Fuerte. I reckon this years Canarian tourist numbers will show people are starting to get the message.

Should'nt the kids be at school? This lot might have some further expenses if the schools dish out non-attendance fines.

Reading Windermere golfer posts about being offered plastic socks at airport - brill.  Disgusting that they don't do this in the uk (or at least not in liverpool/manchester).  So unhygienic to have to walk through in socks or bare feet upon the floor that a previous pair of shoes could have untold germs on them.  On a wider theme noticed that the sports shop in campanerio and the little shoe shop on corner opposite the local police street also have these plastic socks for when trying on shoes.

I don't suppose you think twice about stripping off, walking across the beach & immersing your whole body in the sea, & probably ingesting a fair amount of it in the process. Notwithstanding the bodily orifices it gets into.  Think about it ;)

Yep Spain is on the at risk areas just like France /Uk /Morocco ,Cyprus is mentioned even Greece is a slight Risk ,France is the prime target due to their involvement in not only the middle East but Mali ,nigeria and Libya ,apparently the safest place to go in Europe is Switzerland cant really see there being a big upsurge in holidays to there,as for being rat holes ( isnt that what some on here call Nuevo Horizonte )bit of a blinkered statement there, some of these countries are the most historical /cultural places in the world (but culture is lost on here to most) bit like all Moroccans in corrie are  dodgy i.e  terrorist remember that gem  :( any murders or bombs in corrie recently?

On a lighter note do you think we should have a poll on where your going on holiday next  be interesting seeing most of Europe is at risk (allegedly) asia /Africa is mainly Muslim and Usa is the land of infidals ,Greenland anyone ?

Anyway 5 days till Istanbul and Jordan  still looking forward to it   ;D

Went there on business once. Quite a nice place with lots of tourism oputunities if you have the time. A lot of Yanks go there to see where their favourite fictional character in the Bible died.
However, it has war on every border, so the potential for kicking off can't be ignored.  PS. It was bloody cold when I went

So unhygienic to have to walk through in socks or bare feet upon the floor that a previous pair of shoes could have untold germs on them.

Picked the car hire up (OMG driving round Jordan on our own)and drove south to Lots cave (soddem and gomarrah) then up to a fort thats supposed to be Gomarrah of old we had 2 blowouts at the same time in the effing middle of nowhere ,2 young Jordanian lads ( no English)stopped to help us took one of the tyres away to get a new one fitted brought it back £18 they also fitted the wheels back on for us so we dropped them a few quid, couldnt get hold of the hire company, got back explained to the hire company they upgraded us to top of the range 4x4  ;D

So just to say wonderful people all helpful ,quite good not many Brits here loads of Yanks and Japanese with french ,german and scandanavians but the poor old Brits must be filling their nappies oh well i suppose they are happy in Benidorm  toodle pips for now ;D ;D ;D

Do they actually check the cars for minor damage on return ?. Or does it have to be a minimum of bomb, missile or shrapnel to have your credit card deducted. :D

I always felt safe in Israel. Everyone I know has an atomic bomb proofed shelter in the basement. The kibbutz on the Lebanese border huge shelters so deep you needed lifts to get to them. The weapons arsenal there has enormous and the permanent defences impressive. I'm off to build a slit trench.

I once found an ipod down the back of my seat on a BA flight. The attendant just made a note of the seat number & put it in the galley.  It was business class though, & as we all know, terrorists always fly pikey.
Istanbul is a total cr@p hole, especially if you are connecting between international and domestic. I would have wept if I been told that we were returning.
Would not hold out much hope on the compo front, as most of the stuff that happened would be classed as force majeure.

From what you have said, it appears Turkish airlines actually did a good job..Firstly re the Iphone..well done to the Captain. It couldn`t be identified and he followed what is called Standard operating procedures(sop`s) and went back to Istanbul..The reason being he knew they would be out of hours and it was the quickest way to get a new crew, rather than a land away in say Bulgaria..

Then having got to Manchester, it was in the face of a hell of a gale but fair does they gave it a go, did a go around and after 2 goes they are usually mandated to go somewhere else (sop`s again) which is what they did..There have been many instances in the past when they gave it too many goes and ended up with a lot pf broken people. Inconvenient, most certainly, but the Turkish Pilots gave a very good account of themselves.

Nevertheless good luck with your compo claim...

not aruging with anything you said but what i would say is that when we landed back in Istanbul they said we were waiting for fresh food to arrive ?????  it had only been in the oven an hour, they said it couldnt be reheated??? finally when it arrived the cabin crew put there coats on and off they went out of hours ,seemed to me it was just a ploy from the crew to get out of flying ,surely just serve the food a bit earlier  or am i reading to much into this

Don`t know all the facts but food and ovens are another thing with strict time rules..sure likes of you and me would just say `get on with it and if its number two we`ll leave it`..we`ve both been round many blocks I`m sure  ;D but rules is rules..Due to the passengers being on board the crew had to remain, even though they knew they were being changed, until told otherwise...complicated businesses are these and not for the feint hearted  ;D ;D

It was just a strange thing to say we are waiting for new food it cant be reheated ? So that says to me its in the ovens and they have turned them off so why? Anyway its done the food was craaap to boot as well  ;D ;D ;D
