This could happen in Fuerteventura.
Look at these two British girls. Aged 19 and 20. They're going to spend the rest of their lives in prison in Peru.
Are they stupid, YES. All modern airports, especially in South America, have scanners that can detect ANY ORGANIC MATERIAL. They didn't stand a chance.
Don't feel sorry for them. Think about the 100's of Mothers, who's kids have become addicts, and many died, because of people like these two stupid girls.
They were working in Bars in Ibiza, and were 'talked' into taking a 'Holiday' in Peru. Yeh right, not exactly the Party Capital of the World, where they picked up over 6 kilos of Cocaine and tried to bring it back to Ibiza via Madrid.
They are part of a new generation of 'Wannabe' young people who have complete disregard for the law, and think they can do anything.
How many young people in Ibiza and beyond, would have potentially died because of their actions. My friend died from a Cocaine overdose a few years ago after being hounded by pushers, when they found out he had money, and I have no sympathy for these girls. I hope they throw away the key.
Here here Woe, I agree with you 100% on this, I have no sympathy at all. They usually get promised not only a 'holiday' but £5,000 -10,000 spending money, like really ??!!!! Just bring me some food parcels back eh !
We have 2 daughters of similar ages. Spare a thought for the parents they will be distraught. Sometimes we judge in haste, only knowing what the media have chosen to tell us. Kids make mistakes as we did when we were young. Yes, this was a big one and they will pay a heavy price as will their families.
I also fully agree with you woe, how many more "young" people will get hoodwinked into trafficking !
It had a street value of £1.5 million. Did they really think the good guys in Ibiza needed Quaker Oats that bad they had to transport them from Peru. How many people would that much cocaine have killed? How many young lives ruined over 2 selfish greedy girls ? :( :(
I agree with most of what has been said but I would love to see the scum who asked and paid these vulnerable young girls to go on this trip get their comeuppance. This never will happen as long as corrupt police and customs exist. Five or ten grand would seem a lot of cash when you are young and don't forget when we were their age we believed we were invincible. Thankfully we just didn't get the opportunity of making a similar mess of our lives and if we did, can we honestly say we would not have fallen to the temptation. Hind sight = 20/20 vision. I don't in anyway condone what they did but they were not the masterminds behind the operation and should not be punished as such.
To be fair. The Scottish girl said during that interview that she was 'forced to take those bags'.
We can be cynical or jump to conclusions but none of us know the full story as yet.

Agree, fear can be a powerfull force, but we do need to know what pressures they were put under to do such a thing. I do hope the ringmasters get caught, but that won't know help those two ladies now!
"Forensic investigators have seized phone records and are working with authorities in Spain to determine who the "recruiter" was that paid for the flights.
Police are looking at all the girls' recent financial transactions to find out if anyone deposited the £950 air fare in their accounts."
It seems they're trying to find them..but guillible, frightened or greedy it would still have destroyed hundreds of families and lives. They knew it wasn't Quaker oats and powdered hot choc drink in their bags.

Not a hope. Its like looking for the needle in the haystack. There is a report that they may have been grassed/sacrificed by their handlers to give credit to the police while the REAL shipment was allowed through. Stranger things have happened. I wonder what is the production cost of £1.5 million street value and what street do they use for valuation purposes?
There have been numerous documentarys with exactly the same story line. "Banged Up Abroad" etc .. "We didn't know we were carrying drugs", the Peruvian Police hear this EVERY DAY, they're not stupid.
Why would 2 young Party Girls from Ibiza want to go on a Free Holiday to Peru. To look at the Aztec Ruins ??, to look at Simon Bolivar's Gravesite ?? I don't think so.
I've seen their pictures in various newspapers. If they spent less time Partying and a bit more time learning about the World, they wouldn't be in this situation.
I've been to South America, and there are big signs everywhere in Airports, warning about Drug Smuggling and having Sex With Minors etc, and the dire consequences. Those rat and cockroach infested cells with 6 other women are not very nice. The'd better get used to it.
I agree completely Woe but why should the ringmasters as Kwc describes them get away free and making billions while young gullible girls (your words) spend years in prison. There must be high level collusion.
QuotePeru drugs arrests: We were forced to smuggle cocaine with loaded guns to heads, claim British girls ..........
The girls also told how, chillingly, the gang had a dossier on their families in Glasgow and Belfast – and threatened violent reprisals if they failed to carry out their demands.,,,,,,,,,,
"We were given no option," said Melissa. "If we didn't do as we were told we would be dead.
"We were not smuggling for money, we were smuggling for our lives.
"We have no doubt they would have killed us both without hesitation if we didn't do as we were told."
Maybe they're telling the truth - who knows?

Not often happens but woe I am with you on this. Remember one peice of advice i was given if your found with the dead body and the knife in your hand the first thing you should say is " I DIDNT DO IT"
I am sorry for these two kids and their families but you take your chances and pay the price where drugs are concerned. No good blaming the major players or the end usuers or anyone else in between individual choices are made and MONEY is made.

Sounds like you have an interesting past nacnud :)
If it had of been two blokes of the same age and background, wonder if it would have made the headlines. Bet the Ibiza Guardia are bricking it.
Disney have had their say.
QuoteOn behalf of Walt Disney Enterprises - we would like to point out that Minnie Mouse has never been involved in drug trafficking before - we would also point out that her images are trademarked and copyrighted worldwide and demand that all royalties are paid for the publishing of her photos.
May we take this opportunity to point out that no Disney staff has ever been involved in illegal drugs.
As a footnote: Dopey's dalliances were in the '20s when nothing except alcohol was illegal.

Oh trust me I have
CHARGED - (NOT SO GULLIBLE ??)This is What One Veteran Club-Goer in Ibiza Says: '9 Out Of 10 Get Away With It '
'Anyone who's caught always claims they were forced into it, but I know loads of people who did it knowing full well what they were doing,' says one former Ibiza club-goer.
'The gangs give you cash and you get a week of luxury in Peru. I had mates who did it and they just said they were prepared to take the risk of being caught, then boast about the buzz of getting away with it when they're back.
'For every person who's caught and makes headlines, there are ten who got away and are dancing in Pacha [the Ibiza super-club] telling people how easy it was.'
This is why this recent story involving two British girls is unlikely to be the last, especially given the tales
swirling around the Ibiza club scene about how easy — and lucrative — drug smuggling can prove.

So they were forced to take a holiday on a different continent and accept all that money by a group of people who didn't speak English.
Yes, I can believe that.
POSTER IN MADRID AIRPORT

Ita says: "If you bring drugs aboard the plane, they'll cook you lobster, and the captain will let you fly."
The next line reads: "If you believe that taking drugs is the solution to your problems, you'll believe anything."
There are more Posters in English.
The Peru 2 are to spend at least 3 years in prison before going on trial.
At least they'll learn Spanish, and be able to read this Government Poster at Madrid Airport
when they finally get back.

IT SAYS: "DO YOU HONESTLY THINK GETTING
INTO DRUGS ABROAD COULD BE A LAUGH"
"2999 SPANISH CITIZENS ARE NO LONGER LAUGHING,
WHEN YOU TRAVEL, KEEP AWAY FROM DRUGS"
Notice the rat at the bottom right.
The jury seem to have made there mind up why not hang them just now. When you were all 21 did you not make mistakes. What if it was your own daughter
I'm often amazed at the certitude people possess when 'judging' a case based on headlines in the Daily Mail and what others have done in the past.
Sure, others have done it for fun and profit but that doesn't mean every accused has.
We may as well dispense with all defence lawyers right now and hand out ropes, pitchforks and flaming torches to the lynch mobs.
I'm not saying I believe they are telling the truth, statistically probably not, but how can we possibly know for sure?

I assume you're referring to me but I feel I must point out that you have (I'm quite sure unintentionally) misrepresented what I have said.
I said I wasn't addicted to cannabis.
I admitted to smoking it though.
If you can stop taking it for weeks or years at a time and never experience any withdrawal or craving then it would be somewhat silly to say it's addictive.
The older I get, the less I smoke. If it was addictive I'd be increasing my intake. I have never 'needed' the stuff.
I have never taken cocaine, (or heroin, ecstasy, crack, opium etc).
The only addictive substances I take (and have ever taken) are tobacco, alcohol and caffeine and I do curse the day I started smoking tobacco. Caffeine affects my sleep pattern so I now drink decaffeinated tea and coffee (it still contains a little though but not enough to affect my sleep).
I appreciate your concern though but (for an old man) I'm quite ticketyboo thank you.
You can only stop once. You are not stopping for weeks at a time, you are just having a lay off. Then commencing where you left off. That is addiction.
A friend of mine smokes the odd joint (illegally) for the relief of the pain for M S. Its the only thing that gives him no side effects, his doctor agrees but cannot proscribe it because of the law. I don't think anybody should judge Biggles or any one else until they examine there own life first. No ones perfect and that's a fact of life.

And when you had a best friend who was hounded by Coke Dealers untill it was too late, you get and in-bred hatred for anybody to do with drugs. Dealears wouldn't exist without these sorts of stupid naive girls.
You don't get a job in a Bar in Ibiza, then suddenly take a 2 week holiday in Peru in the middle of the peak season, to study the "Inca Civilisation". The Peruvian Police have heard every story going, over and over.
Still a tragedy in my eyes :(

Wow. Using that false dichotomy I now realise I'm addicted or hooked on loads of stuff.
When I lived in the Middle East - for five years - I also did without bacon, Irn Bru, the BBC, chocolate, ----loads of stuff. All of which have proved to be addictive because I admit to yet again watching the BBC (illegal I know but the craving, the craving ...oh the craving), eating bacon & chocolate and yes I'm back on the Irn Bru - I can go for weeks without it but 'needs' must.
My god I've just realised.. I watched 'Where Eagles Dare' the other night. I hadn't seen it since 1968. My craving must have overcome me after a 45 year layoff. It never lets you go.
Once again your kind concern is appreciated.

A tragedy that they brought upon their families.
Nobody can visit the lively parts of Ibiza - let alone work there - without realising what the real world is like. Pushers everywhere, stuff freely available. When you get approached by someone wanting to send you to South America it's blindingly obvious why. They're not going to force you, that's too much effort. They'll just move on and find another dope. They had to know what they were doing.
The good thing to come out of all this is a
warning to everyone of just what will happen when you get caught and maybe make a few others think more carefully.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT!!
Three years ago, we where standing in Fuerteventura airport in a queue waiting for the check in to open. The first in the queue tested the weight of his cases on the scales by the side of the desk, they where OK. So lots of other people did the same, including me. Some just moved stuff from one case to another, to get both weights under. One lady realised one bag was overweight and the other right. So she took out a bottle of Bubbly and offered it for free to anyone who had under weight baggage. This offer was taken up by a couple. Landing at Liverpool airport, the only person who was stopped, at customs, was the couple who had the Bubbly. After extensive searches of their luggage, they where eventually allowed to pass. We have always wondered why this couple where singled out in Liverpool and how did the customs in Liverpool get information that they had been handed something to put in their bags.
Keith, customs are not stupid. Some people think they are. They have all the latest technology. They have scanners that pick ANY Organic Material. So, If you have a suitcase full of ciggies bought from a cheap shop in Caleta, they see them, and they just call the customs in Liverpool or wherever, and inform them which cases they're in. Seeeemples.
Have you ever seen "Nothing To Declare" on TV. Dogs can smell a single joint up somebody's Rectum :o

Customs are not stupid, but its a requirement of their contract of employment, that their parents are unmarried at the time of their birth.

I actually agree with ya woe, they just don't look into the real world and i think they don't realise how dangerous it is out there, there's some nasty people around...
dead right woe. about time we started thinking of the victims of drug running than the perpetrators. They are 20, they can drink smoke and vote and are adults. They should have been taught if you cant do the time don't do the crime.
Just legalise and tax drugs....
No income for the mobsters and tax for the revenue.
Same numbers taking drugs but the money won't supply gun running and other unpleasant activities.
Job done.

Lifes for living, innit.
Some people are just not very bright.
When the very nice man dripping with gold suggested that they took a 'holiday with baggage supplied' without any risk - for which they would receive a huge amount of cash, why didn't they just wonder why the nice man couldn't take the baggage across himself and save all that money.

Sorry Woe I'm not trying to pick a fight with you - I agree with what you were saying about the way some kids are brought up - but you did omit one drug in your summary (that was played down by the Daily Mail).
"Clubbers who partied with Mr Sharp before he was found dead have told investigators he was also drinking heavily."
Contrary to what one member probably believes, in no way do I advocate the drugs you did mention - I abhor their very existence.
On the other hand I think Surfjames is the only one of us who has offered a possible solution. I think he's also right that it will never happen because of political pressures.
If anyone is really interested in reading about both sides of the argument - pro and anti prohibition - there's a well constructed piece here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arguments_for_and_against_drug_prohibition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arguments_for_and_against_drug_prohibition)
Apparently most people who read it though only read the arguments they already agree with - that's human nature I suppose.
Paddster - Maybe I'm wrong but I doubt the pictures of young people having fun were taken after hearing of the tragic death of the young man.
RVEE - I do actually doubt them - but there does still exist the possibility that the two girls were telling the truth that they did it because their families were being threatened. Baddies have been known to do things like that. We just don't know.
I'm proud of the British Legal system (warts and all) - its motto is "Innocent till proven guilty".
I do agree with the premise of this whole thread - that this case will hopefully serve as a warning to gullible young people.
Brilliantly put Biggles ;D

Just when they thought they were going to get off lightly by merely pleading guilty, the Judge has now demanded they they NAME the people involved in sending them to Peru. Damn right too, now the fun begins.
Also while they're inside, they should be given a photo album of all the young people who have over-dosed on Cocaine in the last 10 years. Giving them something to think about.
