Title: Latest updates on Astra 2F and its effects on TV channels available
Post by: fourthwisemonkey on October 08, 2012, 12:27:46 PM
Astra 2F is not far off from its testing position now so looks like everything is on schedule for a mid-end November switchover of channels from Astra 1N (almost definately going to be before xmas)

Also mid october will see the BBC closing down the streams currently available on 11954H (moving to UK spot beam) and also all BBC radio channels are migrating to UK spot beam on 12-16 Oct.

Current predictions for 2F reception (note prediction=guess as until the beams are lit up we will not know anything for sure) are that the European beam (which will contain a lot of the Sky subscription stuff) will require a 1.2 metre dish (a 1 metre may suffice but may suffer from weather fade) and for the UK Spot beam it is anyones guess but will probably mean a 3 metre dish or above.

Could be an interesting couple of months before xmas and should keep all the reputable installers busy.  ;)

My advice to anyone thinking of having TV installed is to wait until december, go for the nilesat package or look into iptv or rebroadcasters.

The present size is 3.5m for all channels 24hrs a day, that looks to change. Which means UKTV will not be able to receive it either to rebroadcast. Though I've been told that they already have an internet backup waiting in case.

The vast majority of pay per view subscribers will already have a 1.2m dish installed to get the film channels. The rest on a 80cm dish probably won't be happy sticking with what they have but luckily their dish is more than enough for Nilesat, if that is their dish can be physically turned.

When Sky first moved to it's present position of 28.2 East (when Sky first went digital) we had a helluva time with some owners who just couldn't accept the fact that they could no longer receive Sky. Some dishes when turned to the new position were then pointing directly into chimney stacks, walls or other obstacles. In other cases they were part of a heritage area or even just the house itself which meant no visible dishes, though I don't think it applies here unless someone wanted to stick it on a windmill.  :o

"SES-Astra" have set the 15th of November, 2012 as their target date for "Astra 2F" to become operational at 28.2 degrees east, this means that we can expect Astra 2F to be moving from it's current 43.5 degrees east test position next week.

Fingers crossed.   :)

Taken from here.....http://robssatellitetv.webs.com/astra2f.htm (http://robssatellitetv.webs.com/astra2f.htm)

UPDATE 08/11/12 - Astra 2F - The provisional date for the moving of "Astra 1N" channels to "Astra 2F" is the 23rd - 26th of November, these moves will include the "BBC" and "ITV" channels, if this news is correct it means that "Astra 2F" is expected to be moving soon

Latest update from Rob's Sattellite site.......

http://robssatellitetv.webs.com/astra2f.htm (http://robssatellitetv.webs.com/astra2f.htm)

UPDATE 11/11/12 - Astra 2F - Now that "Astra 2F" is on the move and as it has now been officially confirmed that "Astra 2F" will (barring any last minute glitches) be operational at the 28.2 degrees east satellite position later this month what comes next? All "Astra 1N" channels should have been transferred to "Astra 2F" by end of this month and then "Astra 1N" will be empty and free to go to it's originally intended satellite position of 19.2 degrees east, transfer of "Astra 1N" to 19.2 degrees east will most probably have happened by mid to late January 2013, now this is where it gets a little confusing, I am expecting the all "Astra 2B" channels will also be transferred to "Astra 2F", the "Astra 2B" satellite which according to "SES-Astra" is also supposedly going to 19.2 degrees east should have been emptied of it's channels sometime in December, the transfer date of when "Astra 2B" goes to 19.2 degrees east is currently not clear but there are other factors to consider which also come into play when talking about the "Astra 2B" move and most notably it is "Astra 2C", I told you this would be a little confusing, "Astra 2C" is at the 19.2 degrees east satellite position but according to "SES-Astra" it's rightful home should be 28.2 degrees east and "Astra 2C" is supposedly to be transferred to the 28.2 degrees east satellite position in the future. So, some questions, After the "Astra 1N" move, Which satellite do "SES-Astra" move first, "Astra 2C" or "Astra 2B"? And do "SES-Astra" move "Astra 2C" and "Astra 2B" before or after the even newer "Astra 2E" satellite for 28.2 degrees satellite is launched around the expected March 2013 launch date? I know what my trusty "crystal ball" is telling me but that is for another day, after writing this I now need a beer!! LOL!! This could end up as the Satellite equivalent of the 'El Hierro' post.  :o  :D

UPDATE 11/11/12 - Astra 2F - "ASTRA 2F" has begun it's move from 43.5 to 28.5 degrees east, the end is nigh!! LOL!!
NB -  When I say "end is nigh" I mean the long wait for 2F at 28.2E is nearly over not that your channels are nearly gone

So, beginning of December should see if the 1.9m dishes can still do their stuff.
I don't have one but fingers crossed.  :)

UPDATE 14/11/12 - Astra 2F - "Astra 2F" is currently (at the time of writing) at the 35.7 degrees east satellite position and it is moving along nicely, arrival at 28.2 degrees east is predicted to be on the 19th of November

Half way there.   :D

Latest update from   http://robssatellitetv.webs.com/astra2f.htm (http://robssatellitetv.webs.com/astra2f.htm)

UPDATE 19/11/12 - Astra 2F - "Astra 2F" is now in the final stages of being positioned at 28.2 degrees east, there will be another update on Astra 2F later this evening

UPDATE 19/11/12 - Astra 2F - The "Astra 2F" satellite will be in it's correct position imminently, the moving of BBC/ITV e.t.c. channels from Astra 1N to Astra 2F will not be happening immediately when Astra 2F is in it's correct 28.2 position, there will be a small period of testing before all that happens, when this small period of testing commences then the frequency information will be posted here and I will hopefully be receiving a most welcome "deluge" of reception reports from my very kind reception reporters all over Europe, these reception reports will be posted on my "Astra 2F Reception Reports" and "Astra 2F Reception Maps" pages, naturally when something "drastic" happens it will also be posted on this website. Nothing has happened to your channels yet, when it is imminent you will know about it here, there is speculation that the Astra 1N to Astra 2F channel switchover may not now happen until early December (unconfirmed), this is the nature of the satellite business, dates and plans very often do change, nothing is ever set in stone with these matters but rest assured that this website will give you all the latest happenings as they happen, but I will also remind you (it is common knowledge) that this website gives you the latest happenings before they happen too!

Will it effect (or not effect) BBC and ITV reception on my Sky HD box.

The short answer is, we don't know yet.

If the footprint of 2F is the same as 1N then it shouldn't make any difference unless they change frequencies and other techie things.
We should have a better idea in the next couple of weeks.

What size dish do you have Woe?

We don't know exactly but we do know it will be tighter round the UK, they're expecting to use a 1.9m dish in Spain, previously here you needed a 3.5m dish which looks like it won't be big enough either.

The new satellite has new technology which tightens the beam further. What we do know is that the BBC have no plans to broadcast Europe wide on this sat to save money but since they are also broadcasting near free to air from it's back up satellite receivable on a 1.1m dish they are complying with new EU directives. At present on that sat only CH5 is missing.

The commercial channels like ITV and 4 may return to a Europe wide beam but there are no plans anytime soon if ever, BBC have said they are definitely not.

BBC are trying to cut costs as the Sky electronic program guide (EPG) alone costs about 12 million a year and (roughly) a further 5 million for each transponder they use.

As ZappaRocks points out......nobody (possibly not even SES-ASTRA) knows what size dish will be needed for UK Spot beam reception in the Canaries (also in the past it actually varied between the islands). Whilst the newer beam shaping technology on the 2F bird will possibly result in a tighter beam this bird is also a higher power than 2D was (although again this can be reduced if SES-Astra so decide). Speculation on various satellite forums is rife and we will only know more once a 'live' transmission is actually lit up and then expect a deluge of info from all over europe regarding what dishes will be needed.

The BBC/ITV backlink system on 27.5W is meant as just that and it can easily be received in the canaries however it is soft encrypted (BISS) and the encryption is easily beaten at the moment (keys been available since at least January and were actually turned off to make the system FTA during the Olympics). This backlink would effectively mean that the BBC are acting in accordance with the european directive on television if they turned off the encryption. Five is also on this satellite but is encrypted in PowerVu which is an encryption originally developed for US Military so cannot currently be hacked.

Whether the BBC/ITV decide to change the encryption is anyones guess....probably whilst they know not that many are hacking into the system they cannot be bothered with the effort or expense but if the content providers and rights holders (F1, Football etc) decide that enough is enough then BBC/ITV may be forced to 'firm up' the encryption......hopefully for us all though they will not. Although read today of installers on the mainland who are already installing this system all over the place as mainland spain only needs 80cm dish and in some cases only a 60cm.

I could occasionally get it, albeit somewhat patchy, on a 1.2m dish.

They haven't swapped any channels over to 2F yet so it seems a bit strange that you can suddenly get ITVHD. ???

I am intrigued. What new EU Directive, and what are its requirements the BBC must comply with?

BT has reserved two EPG slots on the Sky platform in preparation for the launch of its sports channels. The UK telco has secured rights to Premier League football and Premiership rugby packages, has acquired the placeholders on the pay TV platform, which it has temporarily branded as Sailing 1 and Sailing 2.

BT will rebrand and officially launch the channels next year.

BT confirmed the EPG slots had been secured ahead of the launch. "Sailing 1 and 2 are placeholders for the new BT Sport channel, which will be launching next year," he said. "For test purposes they will be showing sailing, treasure diving and kayaking content."

Meanwhile, BT is reportedly considering launching a third sports channel to broadcast other content including on-demand programmes and one-off pay-per-view events.

BT is expected to base its sports operations in the Olympic Park – with an announcement coming later this month.

UPDATE 22/1112 - Astra 2F - It is looking like the "BBC 1 HD" tests (channels named as 8901 and 8911) on 11.023 H, SR 23.000, FEC 2/3, DVB-S2 8PSK, are now on "Astra 2F, readers in Tenerife (2.9 m dish) and Bavarian Germany (1.2 m dish) are telling me that they cannot receive this frequency, South Sweden (1.2m dish) is telling me that this frequency has a reduced signal

If anyone wants to try this frequency, particularly if you have a 1.9m dish, could you report back please?   :)

"What new EU Directive"

Sloppy wording on my part it's become a catch phrase for it all, the original directive is of course old though with the recent ruling by the advocate General, which is normally followed, was a part of the reason for that ruling.

"The exclusivity agreement relating to transmission of football matches are contrary to European Union law," she said in her opinion.

"exclusivity rights in question have the effect of partitioning the internal market into quite separate national markets, something which constitutes a serious impairment of the freedom to provide services."

Notice services, not just a single service or possibly one channel. This wasn't considering monopolies or competition but whether it was considered to break the standards of exclusive viewing to one country. In this respect the BBC could keep themselves right if they do run into problems in the future.

It's still open to more cases but it looks like the EU will stick to their guns and will hopefully open up the market for good. It was also mentioned that the expense should not be a barrier either which also makes the BBC changing to Power VU on Intelsat unlikely, if they cared.

                                    Another update from   http://robssatellitetv.webs.com/astra2f.htm (http://robssatellitetv.webs.com/astra2f.htm)

It looks like its the end for bbc itv ect on your sky box

Tenerife - 3.0m dish, just checked today (23rd November) signal for 11.023 H BBC 1 HD at 10.30 and it has since weakened from yesterday,       picture breaks up, not looking good for us here by the looks of it - "Lynda"

Astra 2F Reception Reports for 11.023 H, SR 23.000, FEC 2/3, DVB-S2 8PSK these reports were sent to me 22/11/12 to 24/11/12, latest/newest reports are first/top of the list, I pride myself on being different so it might be best to read these reports from the bottom to the top! LOL!

Very special many Thanks to everyone who have sent me their reports

France, Abusson, 90km east of Limoges - 11.023 H coming in strength 87% and quality 93% on a Sky Zone 1 dish and Mvision HD200 receiver, slightly higher than the Astra 1N signal - "Orbit"

Spain, Costa Blanca, Torrevieja - 1.9m dish, getting the two 11.023 H channels here, 75% snr, no problems - "Richie"

Spain, Barcelona - 1.0m dish, Since last week, 11.023 H was received perfectly when it was on 1N (85% Quality on FOXSAT HDR) now I got 0%. No signal at all !!! - "Jordi"

Denmark, Vejle - ??dish, no reception at all of 11.023 H from 28E satellite today 24.11.2012. - "James"

Austria, Bad Hall - 1.8m dish steerable, regretably I must note that reception of the UK-beam on the new satellite Astra 2F is not possible for me here in Upper Austria with acceptable dish-sizes, I suspect that the reception zone is similar to the one of the former Astra 2D satellite - "Gustav"

Germany, Just west of Bonn - 90cm, just to let you know that I can receive the test transmissions perfectly - "Nicola"

Tenerife - 3.0m dish, just checked today (23rd November) signal for 11.023 H BBC 1 HD at 10.30 and it has since weakened from yesterday, picture breaks up, not looking good for us here by the looks of it - "Lynda"

Switzerland, Bern - ??cm Technisat Multytenne, Astra 2F frequency of 11.023 H works with Technisat Multytenne, signal not so strong, 9.4dB (1N was 10.4dB) - "Benjamin"

Spain Southern, a little inland from Mojacar on the Costa Almeria - 1.25m Gilbertini dish, we have been getting great performance since 1N and 2D was not bad either, I have been monitoring 11.023 H from 2F and it is there but very weak and not lockable on my spectrum on my 1.25 Gibertini dish - "Dave"

Germany NW, Bremen - with a 85cm dish offset by 9 degrees (main LNB to 19.2 east), since yesterday evening the signal on 11.023 H increased to a mid quality, but I have a picture without any obvious abnormality - "Ike" again

Spain, Costa Blanca, Alicante - 1.9m dish, receiving 11.023 H, mighty relieved that 1.9m dishes are not redundant and consigned to being expensive rain catchers! Local sat shops still advertising 1mtr "high tech" dishes - "Graham"

Germany, NRW, 5km south of Düsseldorf - 85cm dish, due to bad weather conditions (It's raining cats and dogs today) my signal quality of 2F 11.023 H is 30-50%, 1N 11.052 H has a signal quality of 50-65% - "Alex"

France, South, Grasse near Nice - 1.0m, I can get 8901 and 8911 on 11.023 H and it is watchable, on my STB the "old" BBC / ITV etc gave 100% for both quality and strength, e.g. 11.126 V. With the 2F signal strength is down at 65% and quality flicking between 99% and 100% - "Malcolm" again

Germany, Bavaria, Munich - 1.5m Gilbertini dish, reception of the 11.023 H on Astra 2F is possible but the signal is much weaker then the others - "Jürgen"

Cyprus, Paphos - ??dish, here in Cyprus we can't receive the BBC 1 HD signal either but then again we couldn't get it off the 2D, we did get ITV HD off the 2D though - "Steve and Ann"

Spain, Costa Blanca, Torrevieja - 1.35m offset dish, just got back and am picking up 8901 and 8911 signals - "Simon"

France South , 60km north of St Tropez - 90cm dish, 11.023 H stayed at SQ 75/60 until 13:30 CET, It then started oscillating between 60/50 and 0/0. Now nothing at 14:00 CET. weather good, must be the effects of the sun on out-of-beam reception.- "Keith" again
Ireland, Dublin - 60cm Oval Sky dish and Sky LNB, Signal Intensity = 90%/Signal quality = 85% - "Sean"

Belgium is perfect "Tom"

Italy, Tuscany - 1.2m dish, no signal on 11.023 H but all Astra 1N frequencies are no problem - "Keir"

Germany NW, Bremen - with a 85cm dish offset by 9 degrees (main LNB to 19.2 east) I barely receive the signal but the scan finds the channels and plays them quite broken. Yesterday evening I had no reception at all - "Ike"

Cyprus, Agglantzia area, Nicosia - 3.8m, no signal but I am trying to verify the receiver used, Sky or Non Sky - "Andreas"

Sweden, Borås 60km west of Göteborg - nothing on 90cm dish but confirmed reception on 2m dish - "Franny" (Greets 2U2)

Spain, Altea, north of Alicante - I have just installed A 1 Mtr Famaval High Gain Dish with an Inverto BLACK ULTRALow Noise 0.2 L.N.B. and here are the results from 11.023 H, Signal Strength 86%/Signal Quality 68-71%, this LNB has a long focal and it is important to spend some time adjusting skew and focal to get this signal on your meter/dish - "Pat" again

France SW, north of Toulouse - 90cm dish and Inverto Black premium 0.2 Quad LNB, at this time (12 noon continental time ) the 2F signal test on 11.023 H broadcating BBC1 HD seems to have improved since yesterday evening, 70% strength versus 56% yesterday and 90% quality versus 81%yesterday - "Jean Louis" again

Spain, Almeria - today the quality is up to 55 % and the picture is rock solid, dish is a Gibertini 1.5 [1.65 in new money!], Invacom C120 quad LNB with modified Hughes feed horn - "Harvey" again

Spain, Malaga - tested a 1.3m Gibertini and have no signal for BBC HD/11.023 H, also a 1.5m - "Carl"

Spain, Valencia - 1.35m dish, 11.023 H Signal strength 100%, Signal Quality 70%, Visual Image Quality 100% - "Frubio"

Spain, Castellón de la Plana near Villareal - 1.2mdish, nothing this morning, no signal, so at the moment it seems that we are back to last year's situation when only evening/night reception was possible with a 1.20m dish - "Héctor" again

Tenerife - 2.4m dish, This morning it works between 5am and 10am but after 10am the signal drops off - "Darren" again

Spain, Costa Blanca - 1.1m dish, Signal being received on 11.023 H as of 10am this morning without break up, weather clear and sunny, Signal Strength is 85%and Signal Quality is 65%  - "Chris"

Spain, Cordoba, 75 miles east of Seville - 1.4m dish, test frequency on 2f not coming in... (30-40%) - "Chris"

Germany South, between Ulm and Augsburg - 1.2m dish, I have a signal power of 50 for a second it jumps up to 99 but no channels, others in my region can pick it up with a dish size 80cm around Ulm and 1.25m in Augsburg - "Richard" again

France South , 60km north of St Tropez - 90cm dish, yesterday during the afternoon the sky became very overcast with a heavy layer of cloud. The 11023H signal disappeared completely, this morning the situation is much improved, I am getting the transponder at 80% strength, 60% quality with good pictures on both feeds - "Keith" again

Germany, NRW, 50km east of Dortmund - 85cm dish, the reception got worse by the hour yesterday, It reached a critical 6.0 db with my Technisat HD S8 receiver at about 8pm, it then started to improve and reached a high of 7.2 db at midnight., this morning it lost it`s strength again and was at 6.2 db, a later I had no reception of both satellites at all - "Tobias" again

Spain, between Alicante and Torevieja - 1.9 dish, checking signal this morning and 8901/8911 stable on 1.9m but not showing on 1.4m Prime focus. changed Inverto Quad LNB for Invacom Quad LNB on the 1.4m and 8901/8911 now coming in. Signal strength dropped a little with Invacom but quality increased, seems to have made the difference. Reports here on local forums seem to indicate 1.0m/1.1m dishes are working but LNB quality is the important factor - "Nick" again

Germany, Bonn - 80cm dish, reception of 8901 and 8911 on 11.023 H is possible - "Peter"

Spain, Costa Blanca - It's a large area, so in the north, say Valencia we are talking of reception on a 1 metre dish, in the south in Torrevieja some 200 kms from Valencia definite reception on a 1.85 metre dish - "Alex" again

Portugal, Eastern Algarve - ??dish, not a hint of the 11.023 H signal here, hope the V sig's will be better - "Trevor"

Germany, Mönchengladbach - 80cm Dish, 100% Strength and 100% Quality on 11.023 H - "Callum"

Sweden SE, very southern tip - ??dish, receiving 11.023 H 57% SNR or 8.77 Db, this is 6 Db lower than Astra 1N but 6 db higher than Astra 2D, looking forward to seeing if we can get the vertical channels as well - "Andy"

Spain, Costa Blanca, Javea - 2.4m polish steel dish and invacom twin, quality improved from 76/77 to 81/82 - "Pete"

Spain, Costa Blanca, Torrevieja - 1.35m dish and Inverto Ultra single LNB, I can get 11.023 H, the signal is not strong but is providing a stable service - "Mike"

Spain, Mallorca, Palma - 1.65m working - "Darren"

France Central, 150kms south of Paris/70kms east of Orleans - ??dish  Visiosat, receive perfectly here - "Jacques"

Spain, Costa Blanca, Javea - Some parts of CB that I have tested inland from the coast (XATIVA etc) are getting a weak but stable signal on a high quality 1m dish with either a SMART TITANIUM or Inverto black ultra LNB - "UKTV CB"

Italy, Naples - 2.0m PF, I just checked 11.023 H, very grim situation, compared to the adjacent 1N carriers, the signal is 7.5 dB lower. I can receive the 1N channels with a 1.8 dB link margin with a prime focus 2 meter dish - "Peter"

Spain, Costa Calida, Murcia/Cartagena - 1.8m and 1.35m dishes, receiving 11.023 H OK here clear skies, although on the 1.35m the signal quality is very low but it is not affecting picture or sound - "Jim"

Portugal South - 1.5m dish, Astra 2F is OFF - "Jose"

Spain, Costa Blanca, Alicante - 2.4m Famaval dish, 11.023 H has a very reduced signal to any of the transponders on 1N however I have a perfect signal on this frequency but looking on spectrum analyzer its a lot smaller spike than anything on 1N. You can't get this frequency on a Sky Box, it would have to be searched for with a 'proper' satellite receiver box which can be set to look for any frequency that is being broadcast by these satellites.

Someone with a 3.7 dish on Fuerte has reported no signal although judging by reports from Tenerife below, they may need to get their alignment checked.

Latest update on Astra 2F from  http://robssatellitetv.webs.com/astra2f.htm (http://robssatellitetv.webs.com/astra2f.htm)

UPDATE 30/11/12 - Astra 2F - This from "SES-Astra" facebook page "Services are currently being transferred onto Astra 2F, BBC (Tp 2.061) has been migrated to 2F whereas Channel 5 (Tp 2.057), ITV (Tp's 2.059 and 2.063), and Channel 4 (Tp 2.068) will move to Astra 2F next Tuesday. This will then mark the completion of the transfer".
So confirmation of the 11.023 H, SR 23.000 FEC 2/3 DVB-S2 *PSK "8901" and "8911" (BBC 1 HD's) move to 2F

The frequencies and channels moving on Tuesday the 4th of December will be :-
10.964 H SR 22.000 FEC 5/6 (CH5/5USA/5*/Channel 5+1),
10.994 H SR 22.000 FEC 5/6 (ITV 1 Granada HD/ITV 1 Central South West SD/ITV 1 Anglia West SD/ITV 1 Meridian North SD/ITV 1 Yorkshire East SD/ITV 1+1 Yorkshire SD),

firstly, some channels are really gonna move and might already have such as

Channel 5

Channel 4 HD ??

BUT as of tomorrow

because new Astra 2F is lacking some frequencies range it cannot accommodate some channels from Astra 1N broadcasting on those frequencies, therefore some of these channels will stay on Astra 1N until new Astra 2E arrives on orbit

in jun/jul 2013.

These channels should stay for now

Looks like these channels have moved from their previous satellite to the new satellite....and it's reception is not like before.

But as I type, reports are the channels are now back...a temporary move tot he new satellite, or a permanent move with a tweak of the beam to change reception...

Word on the street is that channels on 2A and 2B 'south' beams are being 'temporarily' transferred to 1N until 2E is up and ready in the summer. So this means most of the channels that you can pick up on a 1 or 1.2 metre dish.
Apparently 1N's pan european footprint isn't as canary friendly as it's predecessors.
2E's footprint should be OK for us once it gets up there.

Have a read of the post below, care of http://robssatellitetv.webs.com/astra2f.htm (http://robssatellitetv.webs.com/astra2f.htm)

My take on what is happening, from what I have read on various forums, is that 2B Pan European beam channels have been moved to 1N which has a smaller footprint and therefore isn't strong enough to be received on the dishes we have been using. It may be that 2A channels will go the same way.
Given that the channels we are used to seeing on a 1m or 1.2m have, or are moving, then we will have to wait ubtil the summer when 2E is up and running. If they then put the channels we are used to on the 2E or 2F Pan European beam, we should get back to where we were last week.
As far as BBC, ITV etc are concerned, it will either require a huge dish or alternative ways of receiving them, ie internet.

In reply to Ashworths question, you need an HD box which would have to be paired with your card provided you have a UK subscription and multiroom. It may or not be worth it until we know what will happen in the summer.

"What is going on? 12.070 H, 12.090 V, 12.148 H, 12.168 V, 12.188 H, 12.207 V, 12.226 H, 12.266 H, 12.324 V, 12.363 V and many more have moved but where have they moved to? As I have told you previously, the informations I give you are correct at the time I publish them but I cannot be held responsible for any changes to plans that happen thereafter, the recent frequency/channel moves should have been 2B/2A moved to 2F, this was confirmed as planned to happen but it seems that this has not happened according to the plans, unofficial confirmation confirms that the recently moved 2B/2A frequencies/channels have been moved to Astra 1N and that they are now transmitting on 1N's Pan European Beam 1 (1N has two PE Beam's), so what is going on here? SES-Astra have confused us all with this latest "move", Astra 2B frequencies/channels were supposed to be moved to Astra 2F, Astra 2B is supposed to be moved from 28.2 degrees east to 19.2 degrees east, Astra 1N is supposed to be moved from 28.2 degrees east to 19.2 degrees east by Q3 2013 so it can take Astra 2C and Astra 1L's frequencies/channels, so why move the frequencies/channels to 1N? By using the confirmed information planned changes scenario I will try and make sense of this (sorry if it gets a little confusing but I will try and keep it simple), firstly SES-Astra need extra satellites at a few of it's satellite positions, 28.2 degrees east and 19.2 degrees east are the obvious satellite positions that need extra capacity but other satellite positions which are expanding rapidly for SES-Astra are 31.5 degrees east and 23.5 degrees east, and 5 degrees east, SES-Astra are also currently in the middle of a satellite replacement programme because some of it's satellites are nearing the end of their life, confirmed SES-Astra satellites which are scheduled to be relocated are 1N, 2C, 2B, and 2A, without going into too much detail about the why's, what's, and how's, Astra 1N was originally intended to be located at 19.2 degrees east but was temporarily placed at 298.2 degrees east, 1N needs to go to 19.2 degrees east, Astra 2C was originally intended for 28.2 degrees east but was temporarily moved to 19.2 degrees east, 2C needs to go to 28.2 degrees east, Astra 2B needs to be moved to 19.2 degrees east, these planned moves have been confirmed via varyious very reliable sources, it is not known where Astra 2A is to be relocated to but"Rob" thinks 2A will probably move to 31.5 degrees east, once these planned changes happen then SES-Astra can move the even older satellites that it possesses as back up wherever it is needed, of course the one other important addition toi the confusion is that we are waiting for the new Astra 2E 28.2 degrees satellite to be launched and operational by Q3 2013. © Rob's Satellite TV 2013

A good precursor to what SES-Astra's next plans/happenings will be is what happens next to Astra 2B (and to a slightly lesser extent 2A), if Astra 2B (or 2A) are completely emptied of frequencies/channels then SES-Astra will be quickly moving the said satellite to 19.2 degrees east and then bringing Astra 2C from 19.2 degrees east to 28.2 degrees east, there is a little more urgency than previously for SES-Astra to do this because it does have big plans already in place for 28.2 degrees east this year which includes new customers/new frequencies/new channels and also the Astra's taking over most of Eutelsat 28A's frequencies from October 2013, although these frequencies are currently being disputed by the two satellite companies SES-Astra do need to have the capacity in place by the Summer of 2013, it does look like SES-Astra are in a very strong position to get those Eutelsat frequencies, if Astra 2E were to experience problem with another launch delay or problems following launch then SES-Astra would be in a very difficult position regarding the 28.2 degrees east satellite position, they would most certainly be very short of the capacity and back up needed at 28.2 degrees east, 1N needs to stay at 28.2 degrees east until 2E is launched and operational, that is certain, so 2B (or 2A) is the only option, could the currently at 19.2 degrees east Astra 2C which is/was confirmed as scheduled to be cleared of it's frequencies/channels in Q3 2013 now be cleared and moved to 28.2 degrees east sooner than planned, as I said, it is a very fine timeline/timetable that SES-Astra are currently working with, they previously have and will continue to change their original plans as and when it is required to do so, they could indeed have changed the 2C plans, and as I said we need to keep a very close eye on what happens next with Astra 2B (and 2A), 2B cleared out or not 2B cleared out!, 2B moved or not 2B moved!, 2B or not 2B!, we must wait 2C! LOL!

Oh, and one other thing, these recent frequency/channel moves to Astra 1N Pan European Beam 1 rather than the wider coverage 1N Pan European Beam 2 is giving me signals so to speak, as well as the new Astra 2E having a UK and Pan European Beam it also has a Middle East Beam, could the 2B/2A moves to 1N Pan European Beam 1 be to enable SES-Astra to test this beam against the 2E Middle Eastern Beam for possible interference issues prior and following Astra 2E's, apart from the initial directly after launch 1N tests there has been no activity on these new 1N frequencies and beams so SES-Astra need some testing and if Astra 2C is coming to 28.2 degrees east sooner than originally planned then it's Pan European Beam would be the ideal replacement for Astra 1N's Pan European Beam 1, both 1N and 2E beams are similar in that they provide the better solution to possible Astra 2E Middle Eastern beam interference. © Rob's Satellite TV 2013

So in summary, if Astra 2B is cleared of it's frequencies/channels it is going to 19.2 degrees east and then Astra 2C is coming to 28.2 degrees east before Astra 1N goes to 19.2 degrees east, it is possible/probable that Astra 2A will be cleared too but as I said, 2A is for another position, probably 31.5 degrees east, I hope that I have given you some clarity on this currently confusing situation and that I have not confused you too much, Rob's Satellite TV, the Gem (Pearl) is a Sea of Seaweed!"

According to SES today, the channels have moved to 2Fs European beam, and not to 1N as per the "war and peace" post above.
Astra 2B is now clear of channels - and will soon be on its was to help out at another satellite location - 19 east.

SES: Astra 2B was indeed replaced by Astra 2F at 28.2 degrees East and will soon move to 19.2 degrees East to support the fleet and provide back-up capacity at this orbital position. The channel shifts should now be completed.

And if this is the "European beam" for 2F, then will 2Es and 2Gs be the same....?

Quote from: Globetrotter on January 25, 2013, 20:41:31 PMThats very true there must be thousands of people across Europe that pay into his coffers.
Well yes, several thousands will will under Sky UK, Sky Italia, and Sky Germany.
But Silvio Berlesconi is close with all his media interests in Europe also.
Title: Re: Latest updates on Astra 2F and its effects on TV channels available
Post by: fourthwisemonkey on February 04, 2013, 23:14:21 PM
Okay a little info now things have settled down. Or as best as I can surmise....please feel free to correct my assumptions! as that is all they are.
The recent changes occured so that SES-Astra could free up AStra 2B so it can provide back-up elsewhere (presumably at 19 east)
Some of the Astra 2B transponders moved to Astra 2A, these are receivable here with a 1.2 mtr or above dish. However some transponders moved to what looks to be the Astra 1N Pan-european beam...........absolutely no chance of receiving here (a 3mtr dish cannot even see the signal). FIVE and C4HD moved to Astra 2F UK beam earlier which is possible to receive with a 2.7-3 mtr dish if well aligned and good quality (possibly not 24/7).

Astra 1N is currently remaining at 28.2E at least until Astra 2E is in place (launch due end May....ish) and will most likely move on then. BBC have announced they will be moving to Astra 2E´ín the summer. (take that as if BBC move then so will all the UK PSB channels) That should leave us with 2E,2F and possibly 2C (on its way to provide backup?) at 28.2E until 2G launches in 2014?

If the footprints for the european beams are as estimated (note ESTIMATED) then hopefully all the sky subscription channels that have been lost SHOULD move to those beams and be receivable with a 1.2 mtr dish or maybe less. However the transponders on the 2F UK spot and 2E UK spot (design is similar) will only be possible with dishes in excess of 3 mtrs. The good news is though if SES Astra take over the frequencies currently used by eutelsat 28a, then they should also go to the Astra 2E/F Pan euro beams so a few more channels will be receivable.

Of course there is the flip side and the fact that the UK spot beams for 2E/F/G have capacity for more transponders than in the past which could mean more channels move to the UK spot beam....something I am sure the premier league would like as they know that SKY Sports have many viewers abroad (unofficially of course) and it may mean they can screw a little more out of canal+ etc if it is guaranteed that canal+ are the only supplier who can be received in spain ( Yes I know Al Jaz and Abu Dhabi are easily available here but domestically not many people subscribe to those whereas they do to SKY.
