David Cameron will be following in the footsteps of Penelope Cruz and Jenson Button as he holidays in Lanzarote over Parliament's Easter break.

The Prime Minister is expected to leave for the volcanic island this weekend with wife Samantha and children, and to return in time for Good Friday.

It is believed that the family, who normally fly using budget airlines, will be staying in Playa Blanca, a low-key resort which is the second most popular destination on the island.

It is thought to be their first family holiday in the Canaries, although they have visited Ibiza and Mallorca before.

Spanish police sources confirmed to the local media that there is a security plan in place for the Prime Minister's visit, and the family are expected to arrive on Saturday.
